what diamiter mandrill do I need for .30
.23 and .016 wire? found about three spools of each at the weld shop on discount for about 75 each for the small spools
also does any one have a pattern for mail gloves for sca fencing?
also what would make a good mandrill for wire that small?

What units of measure are you talking about? Wire that is .23 inches in diameter is called bar stock.

That's pretty thin stuff. The 18GA wire we make our 3/8" ID riveted maille from is about .0475" in thickness. I don't know if wire that thin will work for butted maille at all, unless you have an absurdly small ID. I remember the first maille I made ever - I used the telescoping tubing of an old TV rabbit ears antennae as a mandrel. I used 17GA electric fence wire. The maille was weak enough that I could rip the fabric apart with my bare hands.
