any metal spinners out there?

Post by KerryStagmer »

I just took delivery of 2 26" prybil lathes to replace my 12" spin shop ones. Just in time for a large buckler order...

anyone else out there doing this work?

Well, probably not what you're looking for, but I got the HF 7x10 recently, and so far I'm loving it. I got it primarily to make tooling - extra dies for my whitney punch & stuff like that.

I'd really like to know how to thread with it. I've figured out the horrible instructions on setup, but now I need guidance on doing it... do you suggest any books or websites I can use to learn some basics?
Stuff I will trade for: PWM controllers, steel sheet/rod/bar (4130/410/1050/toolsteel), ITC, casting supplies, wood tools, silver, oxpho blue, gun stuff (9luger/357mag/12g/7.62x54R/22LR), hammers, stakes, or pitch me!

This may seem like a silly question but-

Will you have the ability to spin 18 ga 1050? I am looking for a 14" buckler with rolled edges that is not as heavy as those currently commercially available.

Most run 5+ lbs in 14 ga. I hope to get to about 3 lbs with 18 ga 1050. That I can use it for both heavy and rapier without it getting deformed, if I can figure out the heat treating.

Can you spin helm tops, as in Roman helm tops before any of the SCA fighters jump me. They were period after all. :)
The artisan formerly known as Willing Pell, then Juan Santell and then Willing Pell again. Hey, Prince could do it, why not me?

There's good information (and parts) for lathes, mills, etc. to be had here: http://www.littlemachineshop.com

Check out the different lathe groups on Yahoo like:

http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=la ... mit=Search

Lots of Info.

I also made a database of the info found on one of those groups:

http://www.armurerieduroi.com/pages/lat ... aimer.html

Still needs some work but it might be of some help to you.

I dug into the crates a bit today, man these lathes are huge... I had not expected them to have much length....

They dwarf my 16" southbend.

plan is for one to stay a spinning lathe and the other to become a complex turning lathe (rose engine) as the headstock is already modified and I have a huge slide rest.
