Why would a ninja wear armour? A samurai sword would just slice through it like it would slice through a car door or a tree or a machine gun barrel or a stone pillar.

Because it looks good?
I've read that some Japanese refer to this outfit as the "Red Ninja"

A fiendishly ingenious ninja disguise as a Ginza District nightclub girl -- one of those expensive Ginza chainmail bars, I suppose.

alot of ninja were paid to fight for shogens but they wor the armour so the ename would think they were samurai that way they would think they would follow the samuri code and would fight like a samurai but they didnt and also when a ninja home was under atack they would also wear armour to protect them from the armourd samurai when the samurai would see the ninja in armour and think they were not ninja and they were at the wrong place and would moov on

"I thought Ashigaru were in fact samurai. The lowest class, but samurai nonetheless."
Nissan, Ashi means "foot," and garu means "soldier" or "troop." Ashigaru were footmen, or at least their very designation overwhelmingly suggests it.

Lord Shadow Blade, you write English exactly as it sounds.
Unfortunately, English isn't written that way.

Jehan, I think you must be repling to someone else. I know what an ashigaru is. We now have the term "cannon fodder".
By the way Mykaru at black hydra armoury makes wonderful ashi suits.

Ummmm....
Yeah.
Okay.
You know, you might want to actually try reading a history book.
I'd recommend "Hired Swords" by Karl Friday (incredibly dense for its small size) or "Heavenly Warriors" by Wm. Wayne Farris (incredibly dense for its huge size).

BTW, ninja *were* samurai. Think of "samurai" as "soldier" and "ninja" as "special ops." A samurai on a special recon mission or something was functioning as a shinobi.

Eff--
I had wondered about that, after reading it somewhere-- the author said something to the effect that "ninja" were specialist samurai -- special ops types, as you put it.
Another thing I had read was that the movie ninja costume is a Japanese theatrical convention. Apparantly in Kabuki, Noh and the puppet theater (whatever the hell they call it a' la Nipponese), people (like stage workers operating puppets or other special effects) who were to be regarded as invisible to the audience wore what we call "ninja outfits". Since ninja were supposed to be killers of the invisible type, when they showed up in a play, they wore the "consider me invisible" suits, too. Actual ninja wore whatever clothing, armor and weaponry they thought appropriate for the operation being conducted.
Any thoughts on this? It made sense to me, and corresponds with my own experience at playing at modern ninjas in the gun-thug business. After all, the Chuck Norris movie drug-ninja suits would make it pretty easy to ID ninjas among the general population.
Samurai police patrol leader: "What the hell are these guys dressed up as? Let's jack 'em up a little, guys. Yoshi, you hotfoot it over to the koban and grab some backup."
(to ninjas) "Okay, Buckos-- grab the stucco. Assume the position."
Ninjas: (looking around) "Who, us, officers?"
Samurai: (rolls eyes) "'Who', my ass. You ain't got a beak or claws, and you ain't sitting on a branch. Now grab the wall and spread the footsies. Yori-- you and Naga start pattin' 'em down. The rest of you guys-- if they twitch, give 'em the yari right where it counts."
Ninja 1: (looks intensely at Yori, as Yori begins a patdown) "These aren't the 'droids you're looking for".
Yori: "Shut up, pal. Look forward. Same goes for the rest of you."
Ninja 2: "The only reason you're hassling us is because we're wearing black. I'm gonna sue you guys for false arresteratin'. My cousin is Johnnytsu Cocheranitu. Okay, okay, NOW you guys have pissed me off-- I'm about ready to flip out on all of y'all... OW! Stop poking me with that spear-- I was only playin' with you, man!"
If you think about it, there are some things that remain universal, across cultures, across time....

In a word, bingo.
You've saved me the trouble of typing exactly that.
Actually, I've always suspected that Juanna was a ninja. Exactly because she's the last person anyone would suspect of being one.

And this is what ninja get to do in the modern era...
http://www.hahahumor.com/funny-movies/f ... .php?id=30
If you look closely you will see a half dozen of them almost blending in with the background. The illusion is broken when they step in front of the grey wall but hey, no ninja is perfect...

use "IMAGINATION "

Lord Shadow Blade
If you want a historical type armor then you should read all you can about ninjas and superspies. But take my advice, use your "IMAGINATION" as Spongebob would say. Make something you think a Ninja or superspy would wear. To be honest i don't think a Ninja or superspy would wear armor, it would impede on being a sneaky bastard and running the Shogun through from behind.
Now if you asked me what kind of armor a Ninja should wear I'd go the Jango/Boba Fett kind of armor minus the jetpack of course. Just my two cents. Remember use your "IMAGINATION" and everything will be ok

That is actually the standard US military issue helmet with the paratrooper suspension and chinstrap, which is increasingly becoming standard issue. So in essence, it is both and neither.

Or is it Ashigaru Armor?

L-Shadow, let's get some idea of your age, whether you've had typing class, and what we might do for your sentences. I recommend a slim volume popularly called "Strunk & White." Its proper title is The Elements of Style and you can read it through in less than an afternoon. Suddenly punctuation will no longer be a mystery; you will fear no semicolon. No young public-school-system victim should be without his copy; it puts to rights what NEA-ridden mediocre teachers fail to impart.
We're a rather oldfashioned bunch (as I've said elsewhere, whattaya expect from a bunch of armour nerds?) and esteem good capitalization, punctuation, and even spelling. When you have these, we know for sure we're dealing with a smart, worthwhile guy.
