Face helmet

Post by redrook »

I finally finished my second helm!! :D My first was a 4 panel spangenhelm, so I decided to try a 2 panel this time. I thought I would post some pics to see what you guys think. It was constructed with 14 gauge stainless, 12 and 14 gauge mild, and stainless rivets. The stainless is the polished bright, while the mild is painted. The face is mild also, which I cold blued, then gave a "patina". This was a tip I picked up from a Ugo post. Thanks Ugo! The design isn't meant to represent any particular time period, I just combined elements that I liked. This is intended for SCA combat. All comments , suggestions, and critisisms welcome.

Yes, you sure did a fine job on it.
I think the extended center band in the back to become one of the slats is a good idea.

It almost has an oriental helm face to me.
The trim on the cheek plates add a touch of class.

For a second helm we are impressed.
Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for all the encouraging feedback everyone. I have alot to learn about metal, but I enjoy playing with it.

Sayer, I have not fought in this helm and probably will not. This helm turned out far too large for me. Although I was content with the proportion of the face to the helm, the helmet seems too large when worn. I haven't looked at it with armour on, but without its bobbleheadish in my opinion.

Thanks Halberds, I owe alot of my experience to your countless posts. The slat in the rear however isn't actually an extention of the spangen. I had to make it larger to comply with SCA regulations. I made a miscalculation with the spacing and had to compensate.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it.

Aonghus, first I will touch up the paint, then contemplate what I would change about it, for a couple months. Chances are when the newness is over and I can learn no more I guess I will sell it. I can't say when.

Rannulf, yes the face is in two parts. The eyes/nose/cheeks is one and the chin/lower lip is another. Since there were so many rivets, I figured it would be easier. This was actually a test run initially, but it turned out better than expected, so I used it.

InsaneIrish, The headband on the inside is around 27 inches, and the skull is around 6 inches deep. That is more than enough room for padding for me, though I can't remember my measurements off the top of my head. 8) If/when I sell it will likely be here on the Archive.

Thanks again everyone.
