Jack of Plates

Post by D.Z.P. »

I am thinking of helping a friend of mine make a Jack of Plates when I get home. I saw some postes on this before but I couldn't open links and pictures were gone and such. He said 16th century Spanish. I have seen some pictures online of them and of x-rays and all that but none of them were good enough detail for me to see anything and I am not that good at looking at x-ray pics anyway. So does anyone have any, or can somebody post a link to a place that shows the construction of the item. He is a tailor ( www.deserttorch.com ) so he will be doing all of the fabric part but any help on that would be great too.

Try to get ahold of Dave Teague (sp) here on the board. He has a bunch of stuff on jack of plates. I tried the search function but it seems to have a memory problem right know.

I'm not sure about their use by the Spanish. Jacks of plates were used in northern England and Scotland, particularly by the Border Reivers. One good link is http://www.theborderers.info/bodydefences3.html. There are also good illustrations in the Osprey book on the Border Reivers.

See if you can get a copy of the article "On the Remains of a Jack of Plates Excavated from Beeston Vastle in Cheshire" by Ian Eaves. Nice info on some excavated plates and surviving examples plus bonus info on brigandines. There is also a video (someone help me out on the exact title) called something like Arms and armour, plate armor put out by the history channel with the RA. There is a brief but very informative clip on the video of someone handling a partly damaged jack of plates where you can see some of the insides including the string ties.

well, considering there are only 2 tailors at Desert torch, and only one of them fights, you must be making (helping) Jose do this right? :D :D

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.
