That lines up with my first theory pretty well. Thanks for the info.chef de chambre wrote:Actually, there was a theft in the early 15th century recorded, and it is my understanding that this gilt latten chapel de fer dissapeared them. The thieves actually even tried to scrape off the gilding, and may have smashed it in frustration when they found that most of what they took to be solid precious metals were actually heavily gilded or silvered.

I remember seeing this France, possibly in the Louvre isn't it? As I recall, it was originally part of a set of morions for a king's guard...Thorstenn wrote:Ok, I have a dumb question ? Why would something sooo valuable be found in a well. Something that butiful must be worth a small fortune.

I don't have a picture of this helm.
About ten years ago or so, Alan Baudree made a custom set of a helm and a set of fur lined bazus for (at the time) King Gareth of Meridies.
The helm was a beautiful Sutton Hoo with the full plaque work and one really cool feature. The helm had black, recessed perforated metal, backed up with hidden bar grille across the openings in the mouth, eyes and beside the cheek plates. You had to get close to tell that the perf stuff was there, it was almost invisible.
The cool thing about the helm was that if the rest of the gear was right, the wearer could walk from the heavy field to the fencing field, and never have to change his helm.
And, because it was Alan, performing at the very, very top of his game, it was one of the most beautiful helms I have ever seen. The matching Bazus were just gravy.
I wish I had a pic.

Well if you guys like this salet, you'll love mine. It's a reproduction of this particular salet made by Patrick Thaden. And raised of course, none of that welded crap.
I'll post a separate thread with better pictures in a few days if you like.

This beauty at the Hermitage:
http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/html_En/ ... _11_1.html
An intriguing survival of a highly decorated (but I'd say still quite functional) late 15th century/early 16th century helm.
Other greats, which I'll link to since I'm not allowed pictures:
This sallet/close helm of Philip I of Spain:

And that one kettle hat of Ferdinand of Aragon, which I forget where I found online.

Now that's something I didn't know..
Found him and his website, just yet. I ordered the helmet last year without knowing this. I think I'll contact him about this..
Edit:
I looked Mart up and called him, to talk to him about it , and he has no problem of me having a replica of his helmet. Mine has some modifications anyway, but I'm relieved to know this. Pfeww..
I was a bit upset when you said that.
