Folding chair metal

Post by Hugo de Stonham »

I was wondering what guage the metal on folding chairs was? I have heard its 18 guage but I was wondering if it would work for SCA armour (I.E. coat of plates, lamellar)? Can anyone clariffy if the metal is 18 guage?

In almost all cases it is so much more work to salvage metal from objects that it is worth it to just go and buy a sheet of sheetmetal.

Steve, who made his first coat of plates from the rusted-out hood of a 68 Mustang.

Be that as it may, I'm dirt poor (all money goes to bills) and someone gave me 4 chairs. All of my armour I have made has been made from scrap metal (washer/dryers, fridge, stove) Only because at this moment I can't afford sheet steel, Its also good for practice so that when I can eventually afford steel (maybe even some tools) I will have some knowledge of working with metal.

a little on the thin side so probily want to run with two layers or none important parts ie grives and dress armour. check out the prices on some of the larp stuff some time. use thin or shalvaged steel as dress pieces or larp can give you good experance and money to by tools and better matteal.
old computer cases are easy to find at educational places. for the price of asking. smaller scrap yards are willing to trade for beer or even other scrap at times.

My first harness was made from the sides of an old washer and an Italian army helmet. Computer cases are an excellent source of metal, the older ones being 16 ga. I bought a 386 full tower , about 9 sq. feet of usable 16ga., for $5 ( I just wanted the 2 8" cooling fans and pitched the rest)
