Howdy!

Well, after lingering over these boards for nearly a year now, and reading "SCA this, SCA that" I've started to have a spark of interest. Last year, I "swore" I would never join because some people are so far from historically accurate that it's more like a costume party than a historical group. However, the sheer HATRED of not being able to be involved in ANYTHING Other than renn faires has gotten to me. Plus, in the offseason (now) of the faires there's not a DARN thing to do.

So, where I'm going is:
Is there anyone in the sacramento area (I live in Granite Bay) that is in sca, and would be interested in chatting with me about it. I'm 16, and my persona would be William Leslie O'Brien (my great grandfather's name) and would be a wealthy Irish Kern from the 16th Century. I would be interested in fighting, and would need to get the info on all of that good stuff. Please, contact me by email (westin_harris@hotmail.com) or by means of reply posts on this thread.

Now, as one las question, to comply with all armor fighting rules, how would I wear armor that is legal, but still hide it from sight and make it looks like i'm only wearing my saffron shirt and some maille?

It should not be too hard to hide all the SCA required armour under your saffon (I thought it was called a léine).

Also if you are talking about the later 16th century, you can wear just about any of the armour the Scot's wore around the same time due to the mixing of the cultures.

Well the "léine" was more of a casual shirt that went to about mid thigh/top of the knee and had HUGE sleeves that sometimes went all the way down to the feet. However, what I have heard is that the word léine at the time meant "shirt" and was not specific to the ONE type that we now use the word to describe.

So, because my saffron shirt doest not have the drooping "batwing" sleeves, and is straight cuffed it is called a Saffron Shirt

Lord knows I've been busy with classes.

Unfortunately, I'm not much of an SCA fanatic, but I enjoy combat contests of all kinds.

Right now, I'm in Sacramento (Sac State) until 7:15 Tuesdays and Thursdays. I don't know how well a night session would go, but it's an option.

As I recall, you're rather a slender fellow, and I have a peascod and tassets from when I was eighteen and just as slight. Even if the practice isn't SCA endorsed, it could still be reasonably safe. I mostly have open face helmets, but I also have an Illusion sugarloaf.

I'm in Sac, drop me a line. I've done the SCA for nearly 25 years. I'm an armourer, costumer,fencer, and have done damn near everything you can do legally or otherwise in the SCA. I also do 1830-40's re-enactment at Sutter's Fort and am active in the local ECW groups. (Wes, look for the Free Artillerie Co., Army of Montrose, if you make Calaveras next month)
