costuming from proven practicality

Post by alton_nightshade »

i'll be honest, the armour i'm working on isn't something thats a historical design, it's for haloween, and it's ironman. i decided to do the project becouse i've wanted to make an ironman armour since i was lilttle, and since i've made a few peices of armour i thought i'd give it a shot. the problem i'm having is deciding wich elements of design to use, i know i'm going to have to mix many clasic styles to get the look right, but i'm hopeing some people with more experiance can give me some tips. i'm not making the movie armour. even though it's design is more practicle than many of the comic armours from over the year, i don't want to make it. i'm trying to make the warmachine armour. does anyone have any sujestions on how i can do the chestplate so that it will allow some freedom of movement but still look like something that caould protect you if you were to be hit?

I think if you wanted it to look anything like the comic suit then there is no way that you could design it to have good movment (if it were all steel). The body armour is way to bulky around the arms and waist so if you want to make it look like the stuff in the comics then dont expect to move much. Thats just my two cents. But im sure the real armouers on this site will give you some good ideas. Im just a guy that wears there armour :)

I would strongly suggest plastics rather than metal.

Dierick is right, check out this tutorial. I'd make a lot of the armour out of reinfornced craft foam or plastic. Light is always the best. Making the armour will take a long time, not to mention you only need it to hold up for one night.

i know it's not possible to make it look like the comic, atleast not the clasic smooth version, but there are enough veriations to wing it:) to do a practicle design i'm going to have to use elements of roman and gothic designs for the torso, some clasic french and german designs for te arms and legs, my own desin for the boots, and a mix of F.M.A. automail and clasic italian styled fingered gauntlets. i think i've found most of the elements i need, but the hlmet is whats cousing me the most trouble, it's not exactly based on any practicle designs.

i might, i do need a pattern for a codpeice afterall, but i don't want it looking like something out of starwars. thanks for the idea though, i hadn't thought of using that referance.
