Advice on Sallet visor latch

Post by Friedrich von Bayern »

Greetings,

Last week-end a friend of mine gave me a sallet on long term loan. It has no latches to hold the visor closed. I will be using the helm for SCA fighting. Could anyone please give advice and reccomendations on the style of latch and method of fabrication? Thanks in advance.

The spring strap is made from pallet banding material.
The pins are made from 1/4" rod turned down with a 3/16" shoulder for peening on the inside.

The hook is made fron 1/4" rod hammered flat.
The rivets are 3/16" dome head.

Finished sneck hook:

You are quite welcome.

The hole for the plunger push pin will need to be elongated with a rat tail file, as it moves through an arc.
Fit everything up with screws and nuts to get that just right fit.
Then do all the final helm finishing before riveting in your assembly.

Have fun.

Ps: A poor mans lathe can be made with your electric drill.

Hal,
Thats a really nice sneck! Did you cut that out of flat sheet or was that originally bar stock?

Round stock 1/4"
I pounded it hot flat to get the general shape.
Then sanded it on the belt sander.
Then shaped it hot over a round steel piece clamped in the vice.

Making two just alike is the hard part.
