I'm considering doing with just knees on my armour and was hoping for some advice on keeping them up.
The knees will be wrapped in quilted linen for padding, over the hose, with the knees over them. Will a Y strap be sufficient to keep them in place?

Frankly, you'd better. Armor is heavy, too heavy for friction to hold it up while you move. It has to be suspended from the parts of you that narrow, either subtly as does the waist, or dramatically like the shoulders. Even the top of the calf muscles can do this trick, for greaves. They don't do this so well for a kneecop immediately above this, though. That's kind of like trying to balance an open book on the edge of one cover. Works better to grab it by the edge of the other cover and hang it from there.
