First of all, great site!

Second, try contacting GAA armoury.

http://www.hammeredsteel.com/gaa/armour/gaa/default.htm

I know Master Geoffrey is doing nice helms for rapier fighters and I believe he recently announced that he has hired some people on. The latter means he will start making more helms. He might consider a commision.

Of course there are LOTS of very talented individuals here that may well be able to help you as well.

Hope that helps!

Gottfried,

Did you by any chance see the last issue of Tournaments Illuminated? There was an article in there on making rapier helmets. It looks like what you are looking for could be accomplished by modifying a commercially available (India-made) burgonet by adding a perforated steel faceplate.

I happen to agree on the fencing mask thing. I wear a fencing helm myself.

The burgonet? Well.... Hmmm... I've been working on these some. The ones I've done all started with Sinric's (very cool) close helm pattern as a base.

For the one you're looking at, you will need to add the bill, best done by building the helmet, and tracing the front of it on posterboard, and sketching the bill after that. You will need hinged cheek plates... should be pretty easy to pattern out. and I assume you'll go with a perforated face plate... should be easy (although a buffe with perf over the eyes would look a lot better).

Well my teacher has a standard fencing mask were he had a sallet fitted to it. He cut the outer rim of the mask of and just used the front portion (the part that protects your face). I hade planed on doing it the same way.
