Scale Brunia (pics)

Post by Russ Mitchell »

Thought I'd post this while it's slow. Heat-blackened mild steel scales over "hungary tan" hot-stuffed alum-tan leather.

The front I'm happy with, as I laced it such that it has a nice curve to it. I wanted it to be a bit more rigid against incoming thrusts, and where I've laced it to make the curve, it has a nice arch to it. The back I had some "learning curve" to deal with, and would do it differently in the future. I'm NOT happy with that gap on the left side... my clever idea to integrate the buckles into the weave turns out to create too large a gap. I'm considering either punting and going to a lacing system, or else removing those buckles and straps, and putting them on the outside of the harness so it'll cinch down the way it should (I prefer my armor to fit snugly, just like you wear gloves that are a size too low to protect your hands if you think you're going to get into a fight).

Do you have higher res pics?
I'd really like to see construction details.
Stuff I will trade for: PWM controllers, steel sheet/rod/bar (4130/410/1050/toolsteel), ITC, casting supplies, wood tools, silver, oxpho blue, gun stuff (9luger/357mag/12g/7.62x54R/22LR), hammers, stakes, or pitch me!

I'll take a couple interior shots for you. Meantime, they're stuck into a picasa album here:

I currently have more bows than I'm using (since I don't currently have an LH group to equip, though I'm seriously thinking of starting one)... if you need one, PM me.

Thanks. Believe it or not, the Wall of Death (tm) is my wife's fault... she pouts if I take it down... (no, seriously).

Nice work, looks like a lot of time and dedication went in to it. I would be inclined to lace the side, if it were up to me. It may take a little longer to get in and out of, but man is it solid all day long (I'm a fan of snug fitting armor as well). I use lacing on my COP, don't think I'll ever go back to buckles honestly.
