Hey Muttman...

Post by Bedlam »

You wanted to know about how I attached mail to my WMA helmet. I am unable to retrieve my email because my job firewalled personal email accounts like hotmail, AOL etc. Also, I don't have a digicam but the way I did it was very easy.

First of all it is a drape hanging from just below the brow band. I don't know if this is what you wanted to do, or if you wanted to hang it from the bottom of your bucket.

Anyway, first I made the drape and eyeballed it to see how many links it would take to go all the way around and leave some "slack" in the mail.

When I was comfortable with it, I counted the rings per inch that would be hanging from ocular around the back to the other ocular.

I took a strip or of 4-5 oz leather cut about 3/4 of an inch wide and measured to butt up against the bottom edge of the brow band and go from ocular to ocular. The ends were a little tapered to fit in with the contour where the nasal piece is attached the brow band. (If you have a WMA helm you know what I mean.)

I punched a zillion holes in the leather based on the number of links.

Then, without the drape attached, I carefully contact cemented the leather to the helm. Remember not to let any glue get on the leather where the holes are!

After it dried, I attached the mail.

You will have to occasionally reglue the ends of the leather nearsest the oculars.

Optional:

I glued 1-2 oz leather to the back and cheek plates to cut down on the mail rattling against the metal of the bucket.

I am going to be redoing mine soon and am going to cut the leather strip wider since my holes were a little close to the edge. The mail pulled through in a couple spots.

Hope this helps.
