gorget problems
im in the sca and participate in the Heavy combat lists.....and my gorget is a bit dodgy on the sides where it hinges
,as there is no metal overlap to protect. im having some problems with my neck being exposed when i tilt my head to the side and its making the marshalls uncomfortable and i wont get carded till i fix the problem, i was wondering if i should put a leather or a chainmaille aventail around the bottom of the helm, if that would solve my problem. i dont like the look of a leather aventail just looks bad to me, im a new fighter and have a small budget so going out and buying a new gorget, or helm isnt really an option. the gorget i have is from Zen warrior armory, the helm is an ascraft baker...one of thier tanks. any ideas and sugestions would rock.

I can advise buying a cement bucket (big one, 80 litres or so) and using a saw to cut a gorget from it that'll fit better. The plastic on these buckets is very thick (4mm). I don't know if that is enough for SCA though. It's a very cheap solution, the buckets cost about 6 euros here, and you can easily make a few test pieces out of the same bucket first. I'm working on a brigandinde type at the moment, one ring going round the neck, two plates for front and back protection. Add padding and a cloth cover and you're done for about 10 dollars. Perhaps you could return the other gorget.
I know it's not a very flashy solution, but it works for WMA, especially if you're on a limited budget like me.
Hope that helps.

Check your local kingdom rules before taking my advice.
If tilting your head to the side exposes the gorget, and not the area above or below it, then just add 1/4 closed cell foam to it and your set. If you are a long neck like me, hanging chain around the base of the helm is a good fix, as long as the chain doesn't rest on the gorget itself. If you just don't feel safe (regardless of the rules, which is perfectly fine) then do both, you can never be too safe. By all means, keep a copy of your kingdoms combat handbook with you, learn and know the rules well. Even if you don't do any marshaling, it's good to be safe.

Is or is not the gorget hinged at the side, then? It's hard to say, from what you wrote. If it's gapping above or below the gorget with your helm on when you tilt your head to one side -- well, below the gorget is easier to solve, as a cowl can be installed easily. Above it will take more thought.

Reviving this thread: what solution to this problem did you find, ramses?

well,Konstantin, you seem to be taking care of me, thank you my friend.
i did end up having to replace the gorget, and the reasons were that it was nowhere near legal...looked good, but wanst worth it. i had about an inch gap on the left where it hinged that was simply soft leather, no ridged material at all, and then about two inches on the right where it attached, and again, soft leather no ridged material, so i dorked around in the garage trying to see what would work, as with my apparently longer neck, didnt know that one before, its hard for me to get a gorget that works, but ive got one with plastic, as thats the material i have, and im going to be making an aventail to put on my helm as well, just to be safe. thank you for helping me out, thats twice youve sent me a responce and twice your advice has helped what i needed done.
