Well, I've got my order in to Ron Simmons for a set of bascinet tops, but I was thinking about something that I should have thought of before - how am I going to raise the tops? I understand this is accomplished over a raising stake, but what kind? And what type of hammer should I use? Where should I hit the helmet half to get it to move the steel correctly?
Gundo mentioned something about him posting how to do it, but I could not find anything on this site about it. Sarnac did it recently using 13ga mild bascinet tops from Ron (I bought 14ga stainless) so I would appreciate his input too.
Hell, I've even thought about just commissioning someone to mess with them for a while. My dad can do the actual welding, I just need them raised.
Thanks.

To do it the way I do it:
You'll need a v-notch cut in alarge chunk of wood. the notch needs to be a 90 degree corner, about 2 inches deep. Set your helm top in the notch with the point centered, holding by the bottom edge. Use a large cross-peen mallet or hammer to hit it in the area of the point, which will curl the edges in, and make the the point area more conical. Planish for smoothness as needed.

Well I did mine by setting the point over a Raising stake made from a 1 inch square bar welded to a big ass steel ball slid into an anvil. Put the edge of the helmet top on the ball and hit below it in the space not in contact with the stake. Work the whole top or you will not get the effect you want and end up with a "shark fin" as my friend called it on my first attempt.
Hey I appreciate the faith, PoD but this was my first attempt so I am just a LITTLE less clueless than you are!

Much larger than a fluting groove. Think half of a 2x2, cut diagonal, and 'hollow'
