my first try at reposse

Post by woodwose »

I can't remember who it was, but a couple months ago someone here did a reposse skull face.. it inspired me to see if I could do something like that. I tried a human face, but had to cheat and grind off a cracked nose, then weld a new one on. I'm not sure what to charge for this sort of stuff, here's a link to the page I made for it:

http://mailmaker.tripod.com/new/face1.html

I think it came out okay, though rather expressionless or dead looking. I want to try another one with a more interesting facial expression and use it as a face plate on an armet for rapier combat... as if my shortened schlauger blade with a katzbalger hilt isn't enough to make marshals cringe Image

Cut eye and breath holes.

Paint it a fleshy tan color.

Glue on a beard, eyebrows, and nose hairs.

Mount inside a (spangen) helm.

Go scare people in the tournies.

Holy cr*p! that is some really impressive work! I really love the artsy stuff, especially repousse work. I would love to see the tools/hammers you used. What did you work the metal over? was it a lead block?

Real nice work man!

Now that is some good metal pounding.
I like it. It can be a wall mask also.
Try ebay under metal art.

I think you are getting it.

Ps: your link is full of pop up adds.

He does rather have the look of some peatbog-man, recently excavated, doesn't he? Marvelous work.

thanks everyone
I think I have a picture of most of the hammers and stakes I used for shaping, I'll put it up with the other pictures if I can find it.. I used several different hammers and a bunch of metal stakes of various shapes and sizes. most of the work was done with hammers and stakes, mostly working with the metal cold and lots of anealing, but some hot work as well. the basic shape of the face was done by dishing the metal, turning it over, and sinking front/cheek, eyes, and mouth/chin areas. it was very rough with lots of hammer marks, but I smoothed them out with some planishing and some kind of abrasive disc (not sure exactly what they are called... grey colored, texture like a very dense and hard sponge, about 2" diameter and used with a dremel tool.. great things for smoothing out welds and tool marks)

I'm looking forward to making more stuff like this later this summer

An excellent study in steel sculpture.
