McDavid HexPad protective gear

Post by VALERIUS »

At Mooneshadowe's Triumph of the Eclipse this last weekend, I was shown some gear by a fighter during pickups. He pointed me to McDavid HexPad protective gear and I checked it out.

It seems like this stuff is the perfect answer for fighters who want to have a little extra protection and not all the baggy padding underneath hindering fighting ability. I'm looking into purchasing some of this stuff for my 1st Century Roman legionaire fighting kit and was wondering your opinions:

I bought a pair of the knees before war and wore them directly beneith my leg armor. They are not intended to rub against steel and are already showing signs of wearing out. The hexes are coming un-stuck from one of 2 sides and the fabric is showing definite stress. At practice I can wear them under sweats which seems to be preserving them but at Pennsic I wanted to wear them over my under-armor pants to keep cool. I wouldn't recomend wearing them directly beneith articulation frequently. :(

YMMV.

i wear my shirt under a tunic, so there's a layer of pretty thick linen between it and the lamellar. It's holding up fine.

the elbow pads i have, which cover the entire bendy bit of the elbow, are starting to delaminate. They're also much less expensive, so i'm OK with some destruction here.

I traded out all my under armor gear for this stuff. Its worth its weight in gold as far as I am concerned. I wear their sliding short under low profile under pant legs, as well as their tank t-shirt 5-pad setup under my lamellar. I also have their elbow pads which I have found to not only be very effective, but also help as a partial compression sleeve.

I have turned a few folks onto their gear here in the West as love it. Also I have found that SportMart.com is the best place to get it, and if you troll the deal sites, occasionally they offer online coupons that make the cost really reasonable.

Updated: Speaking of which they have a coupon for $25 off a 100 order - coupon code: TSAVVKV good through 9/23/08

I switched from a gambeson to the lacrosse shirt a month or so ago. I wear it under a tunic, under my chainmail.

I love it. Only complaint is that I normally wear an XL shirt but the XL size is a little short.

So would you say that a normally 2X person should get 3x, if available?

It would be great to know before dropping $150 bucks...

No, I wouldnt exactly say that.

I am a little overweight, and unfortunately I have always carried the extra weight in my stomach. An XL fits me, but it isnt quite long enough to go around my belly. If I was more evenly proportioned it would be fine.

Its not even noticeable once I have armour on, its just hard to look cool out of armour with the bottom half of your gut hanging out of your shirt.

:?

Is that for just the shirt? I got mine from Amazon for $96....

I have the shirt and after almost 2 years of a lot of use, I have a few worn spots in the arm pits and some of the padding is detaching from the shirt. Still great stuff...

Word of advice, hand wash it and hang it to dry, the dryer seems to wear out the glue or attachement of the padding to the shirt quicker.

I saw this thread and got me a pair of the shorts. While they take the sting out some I also like the compression factor that they throw in.

I had a long drawn out fight with Sir Uther and when he finally hit me we were going pretty hard. All I had on was my mail and the pads under my linen braise and they made the coolest bruise.

I haven't had a bruise like this in years.
