Barred-Grill Sugarloaf

Post by A. Whitlach »

I'm trying to find either patterns and/or pictures of a sugarloaf helm with a barred grill. Ashcroft-baker has one close to what I'm looking for but it still has a solid steel grill under it's widened visor.

Does anyone know of someone selling a sugarloaf helm like this or has patterns of how to make one?

I may be picturing what you want wrong, but in my minds eye it would look just like a bascinet with straight sides.
Why not just order one of those?

Oh call me a bit stuburn but I want to stay with my persona in the SCA as a Crusader. And you are correct in it looking a lot like a bascinet. That's how I pictured it as well except where a bascinet has a pointed dome pointing toward the rear, mine would be pointing straight up.

But yes I do agree that what I want is basically a bascinet, just different doming.

Truehearth has ones almost like you want. Contact Carlo and see if he can do it. As for a center point bascinet try Ironmonger turn around and prices are decent, but with the big war coming up ya never know...

Also, check with Otto. He might be able to do it as well.

If you want to stay with your personna then don't slap a bar grill on a sugarloaf. If your set on a bar grill at least use an open face helm design instead of butchering a helm that should be closed. Or of course you could just wear a proper sugarloaf.

If the point is in the middle it's still a bascinet. Doesn't suddenly become a sugarloaf.

I thought this looked pretty good for a bar-grilled sugarloaf.

I 'think' that is an Ashcraft/Baker helm, which he already mentioned having looked at.

My opinion is that it's ugly. I don't like the 'shelf' thing going on from trying to transition the round top into the creased visor. I think the line from the skull to the visor front should be a smooth one, without angles.

My whole view on putting a grill on a barrel, sugarloaf, or other early closed-face helm is generally "Don't do it." However, some heraldic depitions of crested helms, including a few seals, seem to show a grill made of slats criss-crossed into shape. Please consider having the "grill" made of 1/2 inch wide 14g slats riveted together at the intersections. My personal feeling is that this would look closer to the images taken from seals one might find in Fox-Davies for example.
