helm problem

Post by krnkshft »

Hey guy I need help on this one!!!
I'm doing this helm and I drilled the holes on the visor and they turned out to be....triangle!!!!!so I descided to cut all te steel where the holes are and put chainmail in place but I'm not to shure about this idea!!!!And by the way I'm not too crazy about the brass trim.

can any one help me with pictures, comments, new ideas, anything!!!

I'm not following you. Maybe some pics would help. From what i get from it, you're saying that you drilled holes in the visor, but you drilled triangle shaped holes? Maybe in a triangle pattern? I just dont understand what you're trying to say.

The part about the maille instead of the breath holes can be done, but would you really want to? If you want to use it for any type of combat, then i wouldnt recommend this.
Just email me some pics

and ill see what i can tell you from there.

ok but I don't have a digital camera but my friend does. I don't want to use the helm for combat or MAYBE in Live Action Role Playing game with latex sword. The problem with the hole is that I didn't make a prehole when I drilled them so each hole are not the perfect shape they are a bit triangle, it looks bad. I will come up with some pics asap.

You can use a round needle file to reshape the holes either round or some other shape if it suits your fancy. You can connect some of the holes and make slots or crosses also. Good luck.

well, if it's just a helmet that's just going to sit around and look cool, then do whatever you want to it. I'm not too sure if there were ever any helms that had any maille for the breath holes, but you could do it if it suits your taste... Personally, no. I wouldn't do it. What I would do is (and this is just me) weld over the holes that you drilled (or get someone to do it for you) and grind off the excess weld so it looks like nothing ever happened. Then fix it with better holes. Maybe use a drill press this time instead of a hand drill. This is just in the event that you don't want to file out the holes any larger.
Remember, a good rule of thumb is measure twice, cut once. And also, make sure your drill bit isn't broken or dull. Resharpen and try again.

And at least centerpunch your hole before you drill it so your bit doesn't oscillate like this first effort did. It's also good to put a drop of oil on the centerpunch dimple before you start to drill: it helps to cool the drill bit, which helps keep it sharp, which helps keep it from these chattering oscillations. The itty-bitty hole you mentioned not doing is known in the trade as a "pilot-hole," since it guides the larger drill smoothly and neatly through the metal in exactly the right place.

What Konstantin said and you could buy a hole reamer to round out the existng holes. The size of the holes will be increasd by the reaming operation however. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for the tips. ArtemisGreen The idea of welding is a good one, I already thought about it and it sounds good to my ears it is probably what I'll do. The holes were done with a drill press, my steel was snaped with visegrip so it couldn't move, the drill bit was a brand new 1/4inch, I did centerpunched the holes, I did put some oil before drilling, But my big mistake is I didn't make a pilot-hole I simply thought 1/4 inch was small enough to pass this step. And sorry for the pics I will get them tomorow...
Thanks a lot...
