So anyway, have a look at this gothic pauldron pattern

Post by Aussie Yeoman »

I'm trying to make a gothic harness. I've got the breast and back sorted, the gauntlets, elbows and arms are ready to be made, and the fauld is on the way.

The problem I've been having is with the pauldrons. I'm tring to make pauldrons of the type that Pat Thaden made in the Italian harness in the pic below.

So I set to work with Cad, figuring angles and geometry and such, for the lame which sits over the shoulder and outlined in red.

Here's what I came up with:

The only problem I have now is that I don't actually know how BIG to make it. I know it must be somewhere between 20 and 25" long (as shown in mm in the pic), but I'd like to cut it out right the first time.

When I get this right, I will use tape and other stuff to pattern the rest of the lames off of this one.

Mac? Pat? Jiri? Juri? Anyone who's made this type of pauldron before?

Cheers,

Dave

Their is no way to know how big to make it.

Unless you are wearing the armour and padding.
Make the poster board pattern fit the real deal.

I don't know I only have made spaulders.

OK, so if it helps, I'm 5'11", 240lb and 50" around the shoulders.

I'm a noob to this but I'd make a carboard/paper pattern and try it on. If it looks good you can transfer it to metal.

I have made that type of pauldron before. In fact, I made the pair I wear now. I have also played with and worn the suit in that photo.

For what it's worth, on my left pauldron, that particular plate you highlight is roughly 21" long by 5" wide in its largest dimensions. But I am 5'10" and 170 pounds.

Thanks for the pics.

I like your round toed sabatons also.
From an engineering standpoint.
They make more sense that the pointed ones.
They can be worn over regular boots.

I have seen some old paintings with the big pauldrons.
They were very embossed and gilded.

Best of luck on your quest.

Hi Joaquin,

thanks for the pictorial response re: the 15thC pauldrons. your harness looks great!

Would you say that I have the shape about right or should they be more/less curved?

Cheers,

Dave
