Hauberk Tailoring

Hello,

So my hauberk just came in today. It's a welded stainless job from Knuut. It fits me really close, and the weight is well distributed.

However there is one issue. I can't crouch because the "riding slit" starts so low. It binds around my butt and prevents me from bending my knees past a slight crouch. Before I cut it higher though, I'm curious if there is any benefit of having the front slit higher or lower than the rear, or if I should just make it even.

I'll throw up a pic or two in the morning.

Thanks,
Adam

I prefer rear slit higher than the front... the maille will drape forward over your legs rather than back and away from them.

I rather like to have the back slit about four or so inches lower than the front, but it's really all just a matte of personal preference... If I were you, I would raise the front by an inch or so, try it for a day, and if you still don't like it, modify the back and front by another inch till you get that perfect fit...

are you wearing the hauburk with a belt and pulling up the top so that it blouses a bit?

losthelm,

Yeah, to get a minor blousing effect I shrug my shoulders as high as I can, belt it tight, then relax. It leaves some slack in the top part of the hauberk. The issue isn't up there though, it's around my hips.
