On the rounded face of the klapvisor why are the eye slots raised out from the helm? What purpose/function does this serve? Thinking from a practical point of view it would only further reduce the wearers vision than if the eyeslots were flat with the visor face. The only thing I can think of is that it helped serve to deflect strikes that might enter the eye slot or that is was aethetic.

Anyone know for sure what it was for?

You are right, it reduce the vision, for this reason you can see example with little holes specially in the lower edge of the occularia (the ability to see the whole body of your opponent is more important than side or top vision)
The reason that it is raised is to reduce probability of introducing something into the slot.

If it wasn't raised out, things could just hit the visor and slide right up into your eye.
