hey everyone... I know this question has been asked and answered at least a dozen times here but I forgot what was said...

I'm almost done with my pikeman's morion but with just a leather suspension liner instead of modern padding it rings like a bell when it gets hit... rings even more when the brim is hit.. and it's going to be getting hit a lot so I'd like to know what some of the best ways would be to stop the ringing.. it does have a nice tone though but I don't want to loose hearing cause of it.

this is a problem that most people face and there are many ways to help this problem
including
painting the inside
adding a few loose rivits
wraping the face with leather
hanging an avintail
there are a few other methods but thats all i can come up with right now

Something you might try inside of it is some Dynamat. You can pick it up at Car Stereo places. It is an asphalt and rubber mix with a sticky backing that is used to reduce vibration near speakers on Car audio competition. On the flip side of that if you are working on using a perioderish style of holding your helm on you may not want something so blatantly modern in it.

The edge is the key to controlling the ringing. Put something to dampen the vibration of the edge (f'rinstance a camail works really well) and you will kill most of the ring.

(Or you could find the anti-node of vibration and drill a 1/8" hole there ;> )

when I asked my mentor if I should put the rivits around the outer edge of the brim like it shows in most of the pics of period examples I've seen he said something like "nah, if it don't have any real purpose then don't bother"... and I thought the biggest purpose of those rivits might have been to slow down a blade or make it skip off the edge of the helm.. but now I think it was more to dampen the ringing caused when a blade hits the brim... I put the helm on and wacked the brim with my pliers and if it were a steel blade hitting it I think I prolly would have lost some hearing... so I think I'll be adding those extra rivets before it's done

hey try a few coats of snocoat sold at home depot. this works wonders. its an elastomeric latex coating and works fantastic. its much better than paint.
I used dynamat like stuff on the inside of my car and it stinks like asphault. might be hard on your nose when your helmet heats up.

as Scot (ld Murdock McArthur) said. Wear a coif it helps a lot... or you could try to glue some leather on the inside.
