Making turning pins

Post by Lord Vanguard »

Hi all!

I need to make some turning pins to attach my greaves to my legs, but I'm a little puzzled as where to start. I thought about grinding a bolt to the correct shape, but I'm quite unsure of the results. Also, I must admit I never saw exactly how a turning pin is attached to the piece; should I put a washer and peen the pin like an articulation rivet or am I missing something?

Any help and/or pics would be greatly appreciated.

Not exactly sure myself but if you made your pin with a shoulder to seat on the lower lame of the knee and then used a washer and peened like a rivet it should work fine.

It is funny how problematic the smallest things can be sometime!!!

Well, I am thinking about it right now: what about making the pins into an oval shape so they would "squeeze" the last lame in place?

here's a link to one of my pages that describes how I made turning pins for my armor:

http://mailmaker.tripod.com/armor/halfplate.html

it's a ways down on the page, under the entry for day 17 (june 15th, 2001).

I imagine that grinding the head of a bolt should work. yes, rivet it kind of loose, with a washer, as though it was an articulated joint.

Ah! That is the shape I was looking for! It will be easier now that I've got a reference.

Thanks!!!

P.S. Cool site! I like your "stupid apprentice trick" Image
