Suzerain, currently I'm limited to weld no thinner than 2 mm steel. And I don't have any experience on spring steel.

Did some roping today.

I'm not usually a fan of burgonets, but those are some bombad burgs...I like the non-barred grills. That sallet was pretty sweet too.

JohannM, that was 650 USD. 2,5mm and 2mm mild steel with 6mm bars.

Here's my next helme in progress. Gjermundbu inspired viking helmet. 2,5mm mild steel bowl, slats and oculars and the rest will be 2mm.

Thanks Hal!

The Doughnut has seen lots of hammering and it is still going strong. All your tools have been very useful. Only the planishing hammer is starting to fail. The head is wobbling but I'll replace the handle if it should break.

Did some progress with the viking helmet. It will be a Re-enactment helm, so no grills or such. It will be blued/blackened and it shall have some brass and riveted mail neck drape.

Very nice work Ghostpig!

Question, did you do the Gjermunbu construction like the original with the under plate strips? [It sure looks like it.] if you did, is that method of construction easier? or harder than a normal riveted style of Spangen helm?

Thx, EikBrandr

The heat discoloration along the central band suggests a 2 piece welded skull with the spangen bands riveted on.
It looked better in my head....

Just as Mattmaus said, two piece welded contruction and the bands are for looks. Now when I think about it, it would have been easy to just split those two halves and make a riveted style. But it might not be as strong construction as now.

I finished the eyebrows and experimented with cold blueing liquid called Super-sini (Super-blue). I think it came out quite nicely. Not completely even surface but I think it is better this way. The whole helmet will be blued.

The position of the pillow behind it makes it look like it has horns like a "real viking helmet".

Thank you all!

Andy,

First groove was made with a triangular needle file. Then I filed them with a square needle file to get them somewhat deeper and wider. Finally I used a sharpie to get some ink on the bottom of the grooves. All the excess ink was cleaned with steel wool.

Jeff,

Haha! Didn't notice that.

Thanks Owen and Domnall!

Ithought it was more convenient to make a one big thread instead of million small ones and all my work is in the same thread.

Here's a new pic of the Gjermundbu.

That is very sharp looking! how much does the wire straighten out when you flatten it? I've never done that so I have no clue...

Thanks!

It tends to go everywhere when I hammer it. I bend it into rough shape by hand and then hammer it to correct shape. It is quite easy to control the curvature by hammering.
