I like the Coppergate/York helm.

I think helms looked like that.
I would of put a little crease in the center oculars but that is just me.

Jolly well done.

Thanks Hal and jrlragnar!

This will be something between the pattern archive close helmet and Illusion armory one and my own touch. Not a copy but a mix of things.

2.5mm steel, eh? You dishing that by hand? What weight hammer are yoiu using and how long is it taking you to dish a helm half?

Aussie Yeoman,

Yes, 2,5mm cold rolled mild steel all hand dished. I have two dishing hammers, one is 1kg hammer and the other one 24oz modified ball pien. And I use Halberds made doughnut. It takes about an hour to dish that kind of helm half but most of the work is in the fine tuning.

Little progress...

Thanks for that Ghostpig.

Only an hour per half? Man, you must have arms like popeye!

Would I be right in guessing that with steel so thick, there's less planishing to be done?

Haha, I wish I had arms like Popeye!

An hour of pounding gets me the bag of marbels look. Then I'll start swinging with lighter hammers to refine the shape. It not that much harder to dish 2,5mm steel than 2mm. Just hit slightly harder and faster.

There's always as much planishing to do no matter what thickness the steel is. The whole point of using the thicker steel is lost if I cut curves in the planishing stage and grind the hell out of it. The deep dishing has already thinned the material so I don't want to grind it too much.

I wasn't thinking that by using thicker steel you'd grind more...I was thinking more that thicker steel might look less of a 'bag of marbles' than thinner steel.

However, it seems my armchair reasoning was wrong on this point.

Have you ever measured the most dished part to see how much thinner the helm is there, by any chance?

Great progress by the way.

What I can recall, they are usually equally lumpy, so planishing...

I haven't measured but it can be felt when the steel starts to get thin. It moves much easier and there should be careful then to not go too far.

I think I have one set of 2mm helmet halves that I just might sacrifice for the sake of science and cut and measure them. Maybe I'd leave one planished and the other one could be sanded and polished to see the difference.

Hal, I used gun bluing liquid. Brushed it on, let it rust and then some steel wool. Repeat 4 times and finally oiled it.

Ghostpig, I was looking at all the armour porn in this thread, well drooling is more acurate. And I had a question regarding the Hurin helm you made.

How much would you charge for something like that and would you make one again.

Thanks
