You do some nice clean work. Keep the pics coming!
Re: My work, new spangen in prog. (07-02-14)
Thanks Ideval!
All the main components are mostly done. Cheek pieces need some shaping though. There will be few brass crosses and other details.

Made a new work bench today. I copied the desing from Eric Thing. It looked good so I wanted one.
Top is 10 pieces of 48x198mm planks glued, screwed and bolted together. Whole bench weighs about 100 kilos. Still need to drill some stake holes and mount the vise and rr anvil.

Back in business!
New HMB/BotN/Buhurt barbute in progress. 2,5mm mild steel and it will have a visor.
http://s15.photobucket.com/user/Katulan ... t=3&page=1
Shape needs some refining and tail some serious hammering and there's too much material in the bottom, but so far I'm happy how it's coming along.

And he's back! Gogo Ghostpig! Glorious work and looking forward to the barbute.
Is 2.5mm mild really enough for bouhurt?

Thanks Henrik! And it is enough. 2mm is minimum if I'm not mistaken.
Here's some new pics. Tomorrow I'll start making the visor.

Re: My work, barbute in progress (02-24-15)
Gp,
It still looks a bit tall and narrow. Check it against your profiles. Have you ended up with the width you wanted? I think it could use more trimming to bring the bottom angle in line with your sketches.
I just noticed the welds that go from the ears to the crest line. I'm not sure I have ever seen it done that way. Did that work well for you?

Re: My work, barbute in progress (02-24-15)
Shape and size are pretty close to the templates, not perfect but good enough. It came out slightly wider than planned. It could be fixed with fire but I don't have a proper forge yet, only a handheld torch. There's some extra, about 1-1,5cm in the bottom. I'm going to do a hem there. Angle might need some work.
That ear to crest cut helps things a bit when making helmets in two pieces. Shaping is easier and I don't need to get the plate red hot. But there's a big risk of cracking the bottom of the cut out, so you have to be careful. I think this could be used with bascinets also. And this is not my invention. There's pattern in the pattern archive that has been there as long as I remember. I used it as a starting point.
When I get my forge running, I'm gonna switch to the can/house method.

Re: My work, barbute in progress (02-25-15)
Well! This has taken an interesting turn!
I wonder if you have the "arms" of the visor a bit long. Is it too late to move the hinges forward about 2cm? They will work where they are, but the pivots will end up a bit behind the widest part of the skull.

Re: My work, barbute in progress (02-25-15)
Mac, when you say interesting turn, what do you mean?
If I remember correctly (I don't have the bucket in my hands now) that ear to crest weld line is right about in the middle. I could cut a slice off of the arms and weld them back together. But that doesn't sound very good idea. Things could go worse. But I'll check it when I get back to work and I'll make the other hinge parts and see how everything looks.
I made a little paint art to illustrate what I'm after. I need to shape the upper part of the visor arms and maybe change the arm angle so that the pivot point goes lower. We'll see.
I think my potato camera messes up dimensions or I just can't shoot straight.

Re: My work, barbute in progress (02-25-15)
I missed the part where you said it was going to have a visor, so I was pleasantly surprised when it sprouted one.
Quite right, the pivot is nearer the wide point than I thought from the other pic. Disregard what I said about shortening the arms.

Re: My work, barbute in progress (02-25-15)
This is coming out pretty spiffy!
Re: My work, barbute in progress (02-25-15)
Did some hinge work yesterday and the visor is now in place. Pivot point is about 1cm behind the widest sweet spot. I guess it's ok there. Next sunday I'll finish the hinges, they need some shaping, and try to finish the visor.

Got some work done yesterday. Visor is nearly done. Only the bottom needs some shaping. I also rolled the bottom edge of the bucket. Damn, it was challenging! 2,5mm ain't easy. Next sunday I'll start grinding and polishing and suspension system & chinstrap needs to be done too.
Here's some pics.

Thanks, Randall and Marcos!
Here's some new shots. Ihave started sanding it, pierced the visor and made pins to hold the visor down. Next I'll have to make a suspension system and chinstrap and finish sanding and polishing.

They hold the spring steel strips where those two pins above the visor are connected. I'll countersink those holes and file rivets smooth once peened.
