Leather Curie UPDATE finished pics

So I made a leather curie today.
I couldn't find mention of one on the Internet, but I recall someone posting about one existing during the Crusades. Richard I perhaps?

Anyway, it is constructed from 13-15 oz saddle skirting, formed wet and soaked in a Titebond III solution (thanks Kilkenny). It was then baked at 250 F for 12 minutes. It is my own pattern, and the shaping was achieved by wearing my gambeson during the process and holding the pieces against my body for a few minutes right after they came out of the oven.

This is intended to be worn under a hauberk for SCA heavy list fighting.

simple, yet looks great! I actually think it would look great over maille.

There is an effigy from 1250 shown in the book "Leather and the Warrior", which shows a leather currie buckled twice on each side worn over maile and under a surcoat.

I'd rather see it spelled "cuirie," as the authorities do. Yeah, it sounds like "queer-ee."

Any plans on a backplate to match? How is the forward crossing motion of your arms in it?

For this particular...cuirie...I made a rather simple backplate, I'll post a picture of it after the weekend.

The motion of my arms is pretty good, I'm probably gonna trim about 1/2 to 3/4" from each side anyway, to make certain that once the thicknesses of the gambeson and mail are added it won't interfere.

Adam, that looks terrific. Nice job.

Vast expanse of leather there for all kinds of decorative work for those so inclined

Wear it in good health.

So I finally finished it today and took some photos.
The backplate is very simple, though I feel like back in the day they would've done a one piece back instead of a 3 piece design like this. Just a feeling.

Dang that's nice.
It fits like it is made for you.

Thanks for the pics.
Jolly well done.

Actually my brother is modeling it for me in the pictures, but we're essentially the same size.
If you look in the background Halberds, you can see the helm you made for me on the stool. I wore it to practice today for the first time, it was great!

Absolutely beautiful in its simplicity!
I can really see your man-at-arms gearing up in something just like that.
Great job, man!
