Spatz - Tacky or a Good Thing?

For those who cannot afford medieval boots at all (much the less ones made for fighting), are spatz over a steel toed boot a good alternative or just plain tacky?

I would rather see people invest $80 into Bommonds shoes with a rubber bottom and some Dr. Shoals to pad the instep but spats are better than the laces of a combat boot.
