I saw this in an ad for an auction. I have no time for woodworking, but I thought someone may be interested....

Might make for a good trundle bed but with 4 legs sticking out like that at both ends it would hardly be smaller then the original bed, just vertical instead of horizontal. The cross brace could be modified into a ) shape to be more comfortable.

Is it some kind of old school Murphy bed?

That is the only reason I could think that someone would put a hinge on the upper 1/4th of a bed like that. Raise up the bottom 3/4th so that the bed folds away into a wall wardrobe or something...

It's the same style as some of the beds in.....

( don't feel like googling right now )

...the maroon painted house close to the windmill
at Colonial Williamsburg and they are sticklers for
authenticity there.

If the ropes are tightened properly that support
should not be an issue....

I may be alone in the world, but a properly tightened
rope bed is very comfortable.... I think rope beds are
suffering from bad press. I've NEVER had an issue with
mine loosening up.

Someone with a square marquee or other similar type of tall, straight sided tent could use something like that to save space.
Alas, I have a round tent

I guess I need a bed the shape of a slice of pizza.....
