This is my old kit. Sasuke did it for me (I bought the Corizzina from someone else, Sasuke helped me fit the rest of the kit for me), the helm is one of WMA's first (if not THE first) kettle helms. Thats Steve (Fourth Armoury's) rivited chain shirt.

My new kit is still shooting for later 14th century Burgundy (keeping up with my SCA'dian name and CoA).

With Eric from James River Armoury, Maxim from Wild Armoury, Chris from Find-It Armoury and our very own Mad Matt this is this is the start of my new kit:

Helm is a mid 14th century bascient by Wild Armoury:

I am wearing a flat ring, rivetted shirt (which is a little long and too long in the sleeves, but provides a perfect source for a replacement aventail):

I think you're well on your way. Do you have greaves yet? Any chance for a pic of the new kit all put together and on you as it is now?

No greaves yet. Will have fully cased greaves to match the legs when I can afford them and Maxim can do them for me.


The armour has not been delivered yet, so no pictures with it on me as of yet.

What about a gambeson or some sort of padded garment to wear with (over? under?) that mail?

I have a VERY nice one from Klaus, but its silk, and more of a dress type than something I want to wear under armour.

When Rhiannon returns from Pennsic, she will be working on a linen/cotton one for me.

Can't wait to see it all together. Have you started getting your accessories together, ie your belt, pouch, etc? It is generally the little things that make a kit unique.

Yeah I have most of that stuff from my old kit.

About all that I currently need is a good pair of shoes/boots.

No, I'm using a conglomeration of art and monuments dated 1360-1380 as a basis, but the last thing I want to do is "copy" any said monument. After all the folks that have monunments and such were typically filthy rich and I'm not going for that, I'm trying to shoot for a middle income knight. (You can never really leave, of course. ) My sense is that the bascinet with the bretache is more likely to be German or Northern Italian and a generation earlier than the rest of your kit. If you are portraying a less well-to-do squire from the low countries circa 1380, you can probably get away with it as a man whose armor would be a budget-conscious hodgepodge- a helmet picked up here, a pair of legs there, varying ages and sources. If you want to be a fashionable and well-equipped member of the knightly class, however, with custom harness, set your sights on a backpoint bascinet with a side-pivoting pigface to match your limb defenses.

Since my "persona" is Burgundy, the Germanic influences would have very much existed... And yes, I'm most assuredly portraying a less well to do... Mayhap a bit earlier than 1380... maybe more 1360-ish.

Once I get all my kit, if I find I really like the helm, I'll have Maxim make me another bacinet with the klappvisor.

I honestly find the whole "perfect kit" thing a bit much. Everyone has one, and in the thick of it, the high borne were not the only ones fighting... More people need to play that middle class, the squire perfectly content helping his lord on the field. Thats more my playing style too...

It's likely that in your era you'd be most closely tied to the French fashions, so this is probably applicable:

Burgundy spanned parts of the Holy Roman empire, parts of eastern France, Flanders, Belgium, Holland, and Zeeland. What part exactly you're from will change some of the flavor of your kit, though the differences are generally quite small.
