Viking Age Symposium

Post by Halvgrimr »

For me the whole flair of Viking Age Reenactment has faded but my love for research and knowledge still remains.

As such I am considering hosting a gathering of folks interested in Viking Age knowledge.

I am looking into funding for speakers and such and hope to use the campus facilities as a base for such an event.

My question to you all is, if you were to attend such an event, who would be on your wish list?

I would accept candidates from both LH and SCA but am really only looking for folks that really are very knowledgeable in their 'fields'

Mord, Thora Sharptooth and NyBjorn top my wish list, what say the rest of you? (Glen would be up there too but he doesnt answer emails anymore:)

(Id also be looking to bring in several outside academics if anyone know anyone that might be interested....I have two professors locally that I would be talking with if this happens)

Halv,

I'd be happy to, if arrangements can be made. $ is tight.

Well, I've had two grad classes on Old English and Beowulf. My knight wrote his Master's thesis on shield construction (concentrating on Early Germanic) and has presented at Kalamazoo. I think I'd be interested and I could ask Sir Drak.

Is this something that will be more open generally open to interested parties after the speakers are lined up? Will it in modern or viking clothing? I'm very interested in the details.

Hey Healfdene

This sounds very interesting and I will note that you are interested
Right now this is all just an idea (but many things Ive accomplished have started out that way:)

In theory this will be akin to a education conference more than a reenactor gathering.

I am not opposed to the idea of kit but its not going to be a key factor (at least right now)

Just a quick update
I am meeting with some folks this weekend to talk about making this happen.

More to come as I get things sorted out

Presently I am looking at doing this next spring (it gives me time to wrangle guest speakers and will allow plenty of time to the word to get out to the entire known world.:)
