Markland's 40th Anniversary is on!

What sort of even is this? Living History? Combat?
Sounds very interesting, but I don't know much about Markland or this Hastings event.

This has been a longstanding reenactment/commemoration (…nigh-on 40 years longstanding…) in the Markland Confederation. For those folks who want to do it right, (and for some good pictures of previous events) I strongly Matt Amt’s recommend the Midgard site at:
http://www.larp.com/midgard/
For latest and best updates and general chatter there is the Hastingsgroup yahoo site at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hastingsgroup/
The Longship Company will be ramrodding the event. (Actually we had three of our original members from 1969 still in the LSCo and meeting with the park yesterday!) The Longship Company site is at:
http://www.longshipco.org
…and our Yahoogroups site is at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/longship-company/
All of this is under the aegis of the Markland Confederation (which covers the insurance, too):

Halfdan wrote:Do I get to row the longship, run it aground, and run screaming towards some other fighters in my SCA viking rig? Cause that would be nice.
Row the longship?
YES
Run it aground?
YES (we can't use the dock, which is reserved for fisherfolk)
Run screaming towards some other fighters?
YES but it's going to be about 1/4 to 1/2 mile; but then Pevensy beach is a far bit from Battle, too!
In my SCA Viking rig?
NO But don't let that stop you; some elements of your gear may be suitable for reenactment; but bar grills are right out for reenactment.
Hey; three out of four ain't bad!

Got a quick and easy link for what is allowed vs. not? Both for fighting and just hanging out?
Westerners, we have forgotten our origins. We speak all the diverse languages of the country in turn. Indeed the man who was poor at home attains opulence here; he who had no more than a few deiners, finds himself master of a fourtune.

Check out the Re-creational Fighting Rules at:
http://www.markland.org/pages/rules.php
As for attending and just hanging out; mostly we request that you make a "best effort" for 1066. Yes, we may get a couple to "tunic & blue jeans" folks in the crowd (I seriously doubt that any will show up, given that we're drawing interest mostly from other reenactors); but "best effort" has also resulted in some folks with amazing gear!
Our rule of thumb is that, when in doubt, go for the Fyrdsman rather than a bad portrayal of the nobility. There were a heck of a lot more peasants at Hastings then there were nobles, anyway.
Generally, a good helm, stout gloves, and a well-made wooden/non-metal/safe weapon will get you into the battle line.
Usually, if we have a bunch of Norsa or other folks with alternate reenactment fighting styles, we try to put them into the line opposite of each other so they can pound away as is their custom.
So, check the library and if you have further questions, let me know. We are still hashing out some details, but I'll relay them as soon as settled.
Some of our folks won't be able to make it, but may be sending along their loaner gear; more on that later...

Now THAT would be a good 47th birthday present to myself! I doubt if I can make it, but it sounds like fun.
Get lotsa pictures! I'd purchase a CD of the pics if someone offered them *subtle hint
