Helmet Crest

Post by Leo Medii »

I made this wax for a mold for my wife's combat of the thirty helm. It was crafted by me at the Nethercraft art studio and will be cast in vulcanized rubber to be used in mounted crest combat and SCA "special" tournaments. It will be affixed to a great helm with a leather wreath of scallops and vines painted with gold leaf. She was so happy with it she also asked me to cast it in bronze for her desk.

I am curious, how are you casting it in "Vulcanized" rubber?

leo,
That looks awesome! Make sure you post pics when you get it attached to the helm. Can't wait to see the finished product. Will it be painted or are you going to go with the natural rubber color?

Actually, was working on it this past weekend it is going to be cast in high impact plastic, and one in resin and going to try both.

I'm not sure the rubber he was going to use, I thought he said like a tire, but I could be wrong.

I am planning on putting them on leather bases with wreaths of roses and scallops and painting them with a gold leaf like paint.

Not near as pretty as yours but this was one of my first SCA kits
I made the crests all by myself (which was saying something back then:P )

That seahorse needs a unicorn horn, IMO.

Thanks Leo
The base was just an old piece of treated lumber I had laying around
I used a table saw to (really) rough cut the shape then sanded it to hell and back with a belt sander.

The horns are leather sheaths I sewed and then turned in side out (so the seams went unseen)

I then filled each of them with expanding foam and let them set over night. I left a little extra leather so I could attach the horns to the base.

The next day I trimmed off any excess foam and attached the leather via hvy duty staples then covered the whole thing in nice leather and upholstry tacks.

Yeah
It was built for one of those 'knock your crest off' tourneys
It was attached to the helm via several strips of velcro:)

When I sold the helmet after the event the crest/mantle/torse went with it if fine shape.
