I'll be putting together a leather bag this week or weekend loosely based on this bag/purse. (image stolen from Willy Trambone)
I am planning on putting a contrasting fabric liner on the inside. And definately on the inside of the cover flap so that it shows when the bag is opened.
I can't speak to that specific style of bag. So-called "kidney" pouches would have cloth in their construction, but rather than being a lining, it was used in forming portions of the compartments in the pouch.
It definately does not need a linng. But the vision in my head is the contrast on the vlosing flap from raw leather on the outside to a nice patterned cloth on the inside. I figured the best was to do that would be to sew a lining. I'll put some thought into just creating an inner pouch and flap deceration.
Karen... I used the picture of his reproduction because it was similar to what I have in mind, and I was at work at the time and have issues pulling the properties of pictures to give an image here.
The bag is an aproximation of Magyar / Khazar pouches kinda combining characteristics of both but not quite catching the detail of either.
But ... in a mostly plausible manner.
The only strong issue is that as far as I know all of them hung from extensions connected to the belt (ie: a perpendicular extension of the belt) rather than a belt loop as this one.
I know nothing about liners being found - but then, as far as I know, in the majority of originals there was not all that much of the main leather body either. It tends to be mostly the configuration of the metal plates with some bits of leather.
And, for the same period and in some relation to one of these purses was also found a rather elaborate little wallet with multiple sections combined to make layered pockets.
And Khazar / Alanian clothing certainly used contrasting decorative lining.
I think making one with lining is ... not shockingly implausible
Just don't stand up at a demo and say "this is what they wore"
