Alas, sometimes the obvious escapes you. For years now, I have lamented that my Knottwolf kettle hat simply does not fit with the landsknecht kit I have and the cost of a good burgonet would cost far too much than my wife would ever allow though piecemeal purchases are possible.
And so, I have decided to build a kit around my helmet instead of replacing it! I can do soft bits myself (hooray sewing skillz!). I'm open to timeframe, location, style. I would love to portray something not in overabundance. Any suggestions?

Hi,
For some 14th century inspiration try here.
See also Kristoffer and the rest of the site.
All the best,

Who says the kettle hat isn't period for Landsknechts?
Granted, a riveted Kettle may not be common. But, I know of atleast one illustration of Swiss soldiers in Kettle hats.
You might also think of making a pizza hat and just putting that over your kettle. That brim would work great to keep the had flat.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.
I've actually been working on a flat hat to go over the kettle, but it comes out looking more like a sopapilla than a pizza Perhaps I need to look harder but I've simply not seen reference to landsknechts wearing a kettle. Still, I think I would enjoy having a kit pre-16th century for when not fighting melee. My landsknecht kit is great for melee (90% of all blows I recieve are on the head, afterall) but lacking in armor for the up close, toe to toe singles.

Lots of Kettle hats, Kettle hats with eye slots, Burgundian Kettle hats, sallets, et al.
Now, none seem to be riveted, but, considering the scavanger nature of the Landsknecht, I would not consider it implausible. Especially if a flat hat were worn over it. A cevelleire/pothelm under a hat is pretty documentable.
Also, Swiss soldiers by Dolstein:
Now, I have not seen any kettle hats on Landsknechts wearing Rocks.
