I tried using the search and failed miserably. I remember someone talking about having built a portable longhouse for events. I was looking for pics and possibly some insights on how it was built, setup etc. I have some random ideas in my head.

Did I invent this conversation? If so, anyone have any good ideas on a way to make a portable/able to disassemble longhouse?

Nope, but I thought it was in that thread that someone mentioned a portable longhouse. Guess I'll reread and see where I thought I saw that.

I posted a pic of the Longhouse at the Gulf Wars site, and someone mistook that permanent structure to be a portable longhouse. If this is what you are looking for, the thread was about awesome period pics, and was targeted mainly towards WMA, if my memory serves.

There are some folks in the UK that have a portable longhouse.
IIRC its the folks of Manaraefen but its been a while since I had regular contact with those folks.

Depending on how big you want it, you could probably make one by using some imagination, some home depot supplies, and a carport as a base.

Hmm, kinda got an idea there bigfredb, but I lack that imagination you mention. So not really sure how I could do that at all.

And It appears I merged the pic of the longhouse from the inspire thread, with the talks of a portable longhouse in Chris Gilman's house thread... and invented a new thread with it.

There are a number of people on this board who are pretty good with this kinda stuff, maybe if you start a thread describing what you want then other people can give you ideas on how to do it.

Maybe I could warp this thread into that...

Well, when I visited the medieval village of Melrand in Brittany, http://www.brittanytourism.com/things-t ... e-l-an-mil, they had a children's workshop on making shelters. I sat in, much to the children's amusment. A simple hut is more or less an A-frame tent with thatch instead of canvas.

Here's how I was thinking of it (it all depends on $$$ unfortunately) . . .

1. Get a Car Port to start as a "base" to the structure.
2. Paint/Stain the inside of the roof (neo-plasitc stuff) a wood brown color (use a wood-graining tool to provide the grain).
3. Paint the poles either black or brown and woodgrain them. (Heck you could even coil rope around them)
4. For outside roof, get inexpensive bamboo mini-blind stuff or tatami matting and paint/stain it brown.
5. For the sides, it depends on how big you want it. Use dark color Canvas and flare it out to the ground if you need.
6. For the ends/doorway, you can either use Canvas or plywood and decorate it.

If you want to expand on the design . . . for the top ridge and front A, use 1x8s and make an A frame type structure with dragon or bear heads (like the one Ciaran showed). Be creative!!

I had considered something similar some years back.

A wise man stepped in and told me to consider several things.

Of those I remember (the most)

A) it would require a large truck and trailer to haul something like I wanted

B) Storing it when not in use would be a pain

C) Anchoring it - I had planned to use it at Lilies, if not achored properly in one of the famous Lilies Blows, it could be come quite dangerous to not only those in it but those around it
