Linen wrapped over wood scabbards?

Post by Noob McNoobsauce »

I'm currently considering a 1st project. Crafting out of wood some new scabbards for my longsword and arming sword trainers. (Too replace the cheapy fiberglass ones they came with.) While there is a plethora of information concerning wrapping wood cores w/leather. How too's and images abound. I was considering an alternative due to my lack of leatherworking skills and limited budget.

I'm wondering if there is any historical examples of a linen wrapped over wood core scabbards? (I know there are several in eastern examples. I am unsure about western though.) The idea of a Bayeux style scabbard is my current obsession lol.

Sealing the cloth from the elements shouldn't be an issue. Only durability. Which I understand and except that it will not last as long as a leather wrap.

Thanks in advance for any imput folks.

McNub.

S'cool. This'll likely turn into a nice historical thread that some other Noob McNoobsauce can search and find later for -their- scabbard project. :)
