In terms of gauntlets, what does it mean if the gaunlets are grounded or not grounded?

That they touch the wood/handle of your weapon, rather than your fingers touching it.

IE: they will hit the wood before your fingers get smashed.

these do not ground:

These do.

Sounds like you're referring to something else...

"Daddy, daddy, the bad man is after me..."

"I am the bad man"

Didn't you know "Von Halstern" is idiomatic German for "mean"?

I *never* claimed to be nice. I am not nice.

I don't beleive in grounding gauntlets and I have never had my fingers smashed even in the Combat of the 30 which is all long weapons.

To the OP: Ignorance is nothing for which to apologize. That you are willing to admit it is evidence of wisdom, as is that you are seeking to remedy it.
  • One who knows, and knows that he knows, is wise. Learn from him.
One who knows not, and knows that he knows not, is a child. Teach him.
One who knows, and knows not that he knows, is asleep. Wake him.
One who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool. Shun him.

That you have been fortunate has nothing to do with the distinction between grounding gauntlets and non-grounding gauntlets.

And whether or not you believe in them, grounding gauntlets continue to exist. ;)

So my guess is as a newb is that grounded gauntlets allow finger gauntlets to be SCA legal as itll transfer a majority if not all of the force to the wood and not the hand inside preventing for the most part (except for major catastrophic failure) to be at most bruised?

Yes.

The meat of your hand tolerates some mashing well.

yep. I fought in plain old ice hockey gloves for years, never had an issue. I know others with full grounding gauntlets who have had major issues.. I'm not certain on what "the rule" is right now.. but I'll say this.. most people's fingers move the same.. but there's a LOT of variance in thumbs.. and that seems to be where most of the injuries, at least that I've seen people get, happen with gauntlets.

Well before you go shopping for gauntlets, you probably want to try them on. I personally will not wear any of the full grounding gauntlets I have tried on, as they splay my fingers out too much for comfort. Its personal, but I hate the way they fit.

Finger gaunts in general run from 300 into the thousands. For a well built set, expect to pay in the 500 dollar range though, regardless of grounding or not. There is not a significant price difference that I have seen, though some of the non grounding Ukrainian gauntlets can come in around 200ish.

Cheers,
