Close but no Cigar,

It's the casket containing Earth from all the corners of the kingdom, which was mixed with oil to create the Balm with which the King and Queen were annointed during their coronation.

Here I am, embarrassing my little pony. Circa 1642-43 harquebusier under Col. John Hampden. Still missing a brace of pistols (on my "to get" list, but this month's reenactment budget went into the saddle), and someday I'll finish sewing that damnable buffcoat. But pleased with it so far, and Bud seems okay with me swinging swords by his ears and making all sorts of clanging sounds. He's the honey badger of horses, he doesn't care.

Very cool David! Your kit is looking very nice. For a year or so I worked at the Castle Museum at York. We had a great set up on the ECW. If you get up there you should take a look. Good luck with the buff coat. Not a fun process but pretty important bit of kit for the period.

Thanks, Randall! Love to make a big ECW pilgrimage to the UK someday, hit all the museums and maybe even participate in a battle reenactment. I mean, over here, if we get twenty guys together, we're doing good. But we still manage to have fun :)

Where are you guys at? Not many doing this period in the states from what I have seen so very unique.

I have loads of pictures from when I was there if you ever are looking for something let me know.

I'm with Hampden's Greencoats (http://www.ecwsa.org/hampdens/HampdensSoldiers.html), a Southern California based group. We're members of the English Civil War Society of America (http://www.ecwsa.org/). Honestly, though, there's not a lot of us-- perhaps two or three hundred active members nationally. We've got about twenty folks locally, and try to get together with the Bay area groups (Dave Luckhardt and Dale Shinn's outfits). To do larger unit stuff, we'll go to events like the Renaissance School of the Soldier, which focuses on 1550-1650 pike and shot tactics. We're also sponsoring a similar "Soldier's Muster" in Anza, California over Nov 1-3

But for cavalry, well, I'm pretty much it in my area right now. I bug Gordon Frye a bunch :) Any and all information on cavalry kit would be super welcome. Looking for examples of pistol holsters right now, as well as horse tack in general (breastplate, crupper, stirrups, that sort of thing).

Gordon would be a great person to bug on that topic. Well if I were around I'd love to stop by but I am pretty far from So Cal right now. Where do you meet in So Cal?

1 is better than none so keep it up cavalryman!

Distances (and LA basin traffic) being what they are, we don't have regular meetings as such, but schedule them on an as need basis, typically before demos or events. Next thing we're doing is sponsoring a 1550-1650 period pike and shot tactics muster in Anza, California from the 1st through 3rd of November. It's modeled after the RMS School of the Soldier musters we've attended in the Bay area (which are a complete blast).

For the record, we've got loaner gear for anyone who wants to come out and hoist a pike and shoot a matchlock. Greg Marshall is our "guy in charge of being welcoming to new people and bringing the beer" (for want of a better title): ggaffermgreg@aol.com

If I were in LA still I'd totally try making it. Looks like it will be a great deal of fun. Maybe next time I am down there for more than a few days I will check in to see if you are up to anything.

LA traffic, never will be able to forget it. Like being in a parking lot but not where you want to be at...
