I learned (to my slight disappointment) that people in period did not attach aventails or drapes to Barbutes. Is there an alternative to get the same "look" (or mail across the shoulders, and (for extra points) over the neck)?
I know a coif is one option, but thats not my first choice for SCA.
My persona, and armor, are 15th century Italian.
Here is a few pics of the helm http://imgur.com/a/TLkcS#0
Thanks in advance

Use a mail standard to cover the neck and shoulders.

You could also make a leather coif for the dome of your head, and attach maille to the bottom edge of it to hang out from under your helmet if you would rather not have your entire head covered with maille.

Does your helm have a linner?
Would mounting a short avaintail on the inside of your helm give you the look your after?
The other option is a mantle, much like the standard but without the last few inches.
It sort of looks like a tree skirt to me, and could be basted to an arming cap/hood.

This. And conceal a safety-gorget collar within -- I assume you're trying for neck protection. Doesn't have to be huge -- halfway out the shoulder is fine too.Ernst wrote:Use a mail standard to cover the neck and shoulders.
Looks nice with a brigandine.

Here's a 15th century sketch from Pisanello. Although it shows a kettle hat instead of a barbutte, I think it's as close to an "aventail" look as you'd see.
