I am making a Bed In A Box like Mac did, but with some changes to suit my personal tastes. This will be for a full size futon mattress.

After plenty of drawing and contemplation, I finally made the first cuts today. Now I'm committed! I just had enough time today after all my drawing and such to get the four vertical boards and one horizontal board for the front half of the chest cut. I am making this out of cherry. 4/4 (3/4 actual) thick and 8 3/4 wide. Will need to true up one edge because this stuff is s3s, so will probably narrow down to 8 1/2.

A few surprises will be included in this as well, a secret that I am not giving up at the moment!

Will we receive hints about "the secrete"?....or will we have to look carefully to see it?

Hmmmm. I will probably post some hints along the way.

First hint: late 15th/ early 16th is my period of choice

Here is a preliminary drawing of what will be done to the "legs" of the bed. When the bed is folded up into its chest form, I want the legs on either end to mirror and have the look of gothic window arches. I am not too happy with what I have so far. I am definitely open to constructive criticism and opinions.

P.S. Of course after I post this I notice the glaring mistake on the right side, on the "spiky thing" above the dart.

Two things....

1---What does your exemplar look like? You will have the best structural and aesthetic results is you can copy something.

2---Watch out for things that stick out into space, but do not have the wood grain running so as best to support them. (see #1)

Aha, you hit the nail on the head. I simplified a window design I found on Google Images. I think that tonight I will look through photographs of chests and other furniture and find a design to copy from there.

They weren't too worried about dangly bits hanging out in space when it came to windows. I can definitely see where they are a problem on furniture.
