Hey everybody!

Thanks to all those who made it to the very 1st Conroi FitzOsbern event! I think the event went very well and am pretty sure everyone had a great time. There are some things we will do different for the next event we host (yes, there will be another one). As well as adding more people, including more horses, so I could have got more assessments out of the way. I will have more time now to fix the site up too. But I was glad to get at least 4 Cav. assessments done and for Halvgrim to get more foot assessments done. The general comaraderi, especially with members of a couple different groups, like FitzOsbern, Vikings NA individuals, even some SCA types that wanted to get more authentic and learn live steel, was a good pre-run for Hastings.

I will post photos this week. Hope everyone made it home safely (and didn't have to buy any more batteries). It was nice to meet in person, those I talk to on line.

Thanks again everyone for making the event a great one!

Jesse

(PS - we left the DOG at the farm)

I just love to hear of people having a good time at something I LIKE! Am looking forward to the pics too. I have toyed with the notion of shaving the back of my head for TNBO too. A "Norman" with a 'stache and beard; or an Englishman with a "Norman" 'do. Take your pick.... (I have a 25mm miniature Norman nobleman on horseback with the back of his head shaved and he has a full beard as well. I can use "him" as my source :D )

Well what a fun time. Thanks to all who showed up - especially all that made such long drives. Thanks to Halvgrim for all his travel and getting folks trained. Special thanks to Jesse and Wendy for making it all happen and all the work that goes on that no one ever sees.
Wendy sent these pictures out.
Look forward to seeing y'all again soon

Other than a couple of relatively minor incidents I think the event went off very well indeed. Everyone who attended said that they had a grand time and that they were pleased with it (of course, would they really tell me otherwise? ;) ). The weather cooperated very well, and was similar to a nice spring or fall English day. Friday was a travel day for most, and by sundown we had a nice fire going with several folks in attendance. Though the temp dipped nearly to freezing that night, we all stayed relatively warm. With morning we had several folks show up, including James, Oathlog, and Mandy (who had not gotten on the road until 9pm Friday night and had driven ~12 hours to get there, only to pretty much get going when they arrived! Certainly the most heroic of attendees).

Initial training got underway, with several folks working on their basic assessment for sword and spear (including me!). Afterwards we went out to the field to practice shield wall and unit maneuvers, while the cavalry folks did some drill and basic assessment for mounted combat w/ Jesse. We then began working w/ cavalry vs. infantry, which I think was a really good time for all, and was a great thing to have for those of us planning on going overseas for TNBO in October.

We then broke for lunch, and several other folks continued to arrive. After a meal and a rest, everyone suited up and we decided to run a few "tactical scenarios", with the Normans going on patrol down a road and the Saxons holding ambushes to slow us down/destroy us. For me personally, this was one of the most interesting parts of the event because I think that, even with the limitations placed upon us for safety concerns, it gives us a small and brief glimpse into what it might have been like to have been involved in a "small unit action" during the 11th century (I plan on writing an essay on my humble observations, stay tuned). We did several of these, and then headed back to camp for some more training and assessment activities. Finally, it was time to reward ourselves with a refreshing beverage and the good company of our new-found friends/enemies/etc.

It was really great to meet several folks who I've only been able to know online, especially Halvgrim, and to see again folks I've already met. I'm with Jesse, this is something that I think we should do again, perhaps an annual event if folks would be interested in doing it: The site is a really good one, and with even a few improvements can be very event-friendly; Fitzosbern's ability to run an event can only improve; and the climate in the area lends itself to having the event this early in the year. The event from Fitzosbern's perspective was a very positive success; there is always room for improvement, and I'd really like to hear from attendees what could be done to make it better in the future.

Before closing, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank several people.

First, all the folks who drove literally thousands of miles to come to Georgia for our event; this kind of dedication from individuals proves to me (as though there was any doubt) that there is a fervent belief in what it is we're trying to do with medieval reenactment/LH in North America.

Second, Halvgrim for being the "old hand/grand poobah" and being willing to come all the way down to do assessments and make sure everything is clicking as far as our participation in Vikes NA.

Third, I'd like to thank Jesse for taking point on the event: getting the site prepared, putting signs up, and just generally making it happen.

Fourth, to Andy/Sir Wulfric for hosting the event info website and making sure that everyone got the directions they needed to get to the site.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank Jesse's wife Wendy for being the catch-all runner/gopher/supporter/supplier bringer-carrier, and all around support staff for the event. She is the power behind the throne (so to speak) and always helps out above and beyond, not only at events but in every little (and big) thing that Conroi Fitzosbern does.

Thanks to friends old and new for making this work!

Then I noticed the spear shot firmly in my belly! :)

Looks like an excellent event. Wish I could have been there, but between the ship, work, and many familial obligations, it just couldn't happen.

Maybe in the future. Meanwhile, keep up the good work.

Now we know why JesseB fell off his horse
If you look at the bottom right of the above pic you can clearly see that it wasnt the horses fault at all

They say a picture is worth a thousand words but this one is only worth six of them:

"Glen speared Jesse thru the head."

  :D

Jesse

I think I am going to be it this time, everyone else is wussing do to having small children

I think I will stick with ground pounding this year; I like the fighting and have little experience with a horse. Maybe the next big one I will be ready to fight via horseback.

Remember darling hubby James - you are not going to be the only one - your wife is going with you - no way she'd let you go by yourself... :)

Not that I'm participating, but someone has to take the photos! :)

They'll actually be three "hangers on", Kim, since Pris will be going to and will definitely not be dressing out. A good time should be had by all! After the battle, we're going to hang out in Sussex for a bit, then take several days in Normandy itself, though time will be split between medieval coolness and WWII coolness.
