My SCA kit progress through the years: Thanks Armour Archive

Post by olaf haraldson »

My kit has come a long way since I started in the SCA. I started back in 1997-ish, and my armour has been through many incarnations since. Here are the high (or low) points...

First is the plastic lorica and armoured kilt... thsi was my very first armour, I made none of it, i was all bought second hand or given to me.
Second is my leathe lorica... I was trying to look like a fighter from Mountain freehold named Elezar. I failed...
Third is after I found the Armour Archive, and that is my leather lamellar. I was starting in the direction of trying to look period-ish, and this was what I came up with. Still sporting some sports gear, mostly hidden. All modern fabrics, or cotton. Later, I also added in maille to the kit.
Fourth, steel lamellar. Made it myself, several sets actually, tweaking the materials/design, but they were all basically the same. Also added flat ring maille with sleeves later too.
Fifth, my current kit. Flat ring maille, helm with drape. Linen pants, wool tunic, leg wraps, socks. Hand made shoes. Center grip round, wooden edged in rawhide. Viking hardware on sword, tooled and painted scabbard.

Thanks Armour Archive, for all the inspiration and advice through the years. Now to keep improving...

In addiion to the progress in looks, I have also changed WHAT I fight with... axes, spear, sword...
I also stopped acting out wounds. I take legs as a kill, and generally arms the same way.
My sof kit has evolved as well, I own nothing that is not from wool or linen, and it's all made by my wife, including most, if not all of the trim.

And Murdock, I believe you're right, we did meet at the Archive gathering, though I was in my soft kit then. I will try and post a good pic of that too.

Now to complete the progression. Move over to Metal weapons . . .

Come on, come to the Dark Side . . . you know you want to . . .

It's not really armour if you haven't bled on it.

Servus!

Really great progress, Olaf! I shudder to think of some of the stuff I wore when I started this hobby...
