Likewise flattered to be on the wish list.

I MAY be able to swing work-related travel into SoCal, as I go there fairly often. It'd be nice if I had my Late 14th C kit together by then. I need a set of arms and legs. Know any at a decent price?

Jehan,

How far into So. CA are you talking? I've got some friends throughout CA who do primitive camping, also appropriate for horses. So water, wood and grass are their prime considerations. Give me an idea of about what part you're talking about, and maybe they already know the perfect spot.

I'm planning on coming. The 3rd week of June won't work for me, but otherwise, I'm good to go. This years event was so good that I'll do my absolute best to be there, and drag Morgan along as well!

Take care, and be safe,

Alan

Alan, I very much had your offer of aid in this regard when I decided that, redeployment, child, and pending move be damned, let's do a three-peat. I would say south of San Fransisco would be appropriate. I would like to try public lands if at all possible, due to--as Brent said--insurance issues. I am more or less throwing site selection to those who are in the know, as I have no ability to scout right now.

Jeff, Patrick Thaden was selling a set of integrated cuisses and greaves suitable for a man at arms impression from the mid to late-fourteenth century, but that auction is over. Winning bid was $250. James River could do a suitable set for $350 to $400 I believe.

Tasha, you gots my hood! I have to invite you! Jon Barber doesn't like me, by the way. I read it many, many times in his sig line, so I don't know if he's interested in coming, though perhaps this might be the case where if I tell you he's coming, and I tell him you're coming, then I can judo flip both of you into coming

As an absolute latest, the event will be held in mid-June, since I will be clearing my house and apartment hunting near Monterey, CA and no earlier than mid-March, since I am here in Iraq until then. Jeff and Luke's commitments are very much on my mind as I have their attendance in mind. Also, concerned with Circa 1470's commitments to events. Early to mid-May would be excellent. I am not planning on having any truly pressing commitments once I redploy in early March 2009. I will be out of command and in that glorious place where, relieved of the wondrous burden, and shortly to move to a new assignment, I should have freedom to take as much leave as I like.

Does that mean we may see you at the odd West Kingdom event thereafter? That would be very cool. :)

ORLY? I didn't know he'd put something in his sig... Huh.

As for him not liking you, he doesn't like ANYBODY. Don't feel too special. He's an equal opportunity misanthrope with a long list. I enjoy the delusion that I'm not on the list.

Back on topic... when you scout your locations, a creek or a river would be a bonus. And trees with shade. :)

John, you're killing me! You plan an event in Cali and I won't be able to attend unless a miracle happens. Our technicians contract is up in 2009 and management (me) has been told no vacation after April 1, this condition will remain in effect until the new contract is signed due to a potential work stoppage.

The rest of C. 1470 can attend if they so desire and I will see that the word gets out. BTW, Steve Lund is part of C.1470.

You know what, guys, I'm tired. Maybe it's the eighty-four-plus hour weeks with no days off. Maybe it's the being in Iraq for another seven months, I don't know.

I'm finding it hard to be jazzed about setting this thing up. I'll probably change my mind, but for now, I'm just tired. I find myself wanting someone else to pull for a while.

When I come back home after fifteen months in Iraq, the last thing I want to do is sweat portacrappers and water, and haul my stuff up a mountainside. Plus, I have zero agency to really scout locations and the site is key, as it does so much to either make or ruin the event. Call me selfish, but damn, as I have amply expressed:

I'm tired.

Jehan;

I can understand tired, and you are in a VERY tiring situation now, but hopefully things will clear up with a bit of rest (when you can catch some!)

Anyway...

This is definitely a cool event, and since it's going to be on my side of the continent this time, I'll make every effort to attend... with the horses, too, of course. I've even started putting together my 15th Century kit just for this. 8)

We'll portray a complete Lance if at all possible, with an homme d'armes, coustillier, several mounted archers and some pages as well. The only possible conflict for us would be the School of the Renaissance Soldier, which will probably be held in early April again, as usual. Still no date for that set yet, however.

I look forward to hearing more about this. It's definitely going to be on the list of "Cool Things To Do". :)

Cheers!

John,

Like Gordon said, you deserve to be tired.

I'll do what I can to help out. I sent out word to a couple of friends in No. Cal, one of which moved from So. Cal, asking about sites. I'll expand that question to a bunch of guys down that way. The requirements you have are the same as they have.

Would up on the CA/NV border, out of Reno work? It might be easier for the crew from Las Vegas to make it up.

So hang in there, others are working to help you keep this wonderful thing going!

Relax. Just let it go without thinking about it for a week. Its Pennsic week anyways so people are paying less attention here and your not likely to figure it all out this week. Find something else to do or read or think about other then this.

Northern California would be a lot easier for me, that's for sure. If it's sometime either side of the School of the Renaissance Soldier (early April) I'll just leave the horses with a friend, and fly home and back in between. I guess I'll have to do that with John's event, too, come to think of it!

Cheers!

We have a growing Viking group in N Cal, the Gauls of Gaesetae, a 1AD Roman group, and a Scots group.

Now all we need is the SF Presidio! :)

I was just corresponding with Alan about this very thing. I have succumbed to real life. My wife is a little tired. I have a big move coming up right at the time that CiT would be, my block leave is too early in the year (March-April) and I will be in command still until May. I have agreed with my wife not to do it this year, but that at least avoids burnout and allows the possibility of a CiT 2010.

There may be a CiT 2009, but it would be someone else picking it up.

I have no problem with 2010. My vote is for keeping it in Northern CA and allowing enough time to do it right rather than rushing it.

Captain, calling your day job "real life" is a masterpiece of understatement. :)

I've got some feelers out for a site in Western Idaho. Lots of National Forest, which eliminates site insurance, which can be a pain.

This wouldn't be too far away for No. Ca, OR, WA, NV, etc. Easy flights into Boise for those coming further away.

Jehan has put the model together, let's see if we can follow his example.

Hey John,

I think you and Lorelei have made the right choice. There's a lot going on for a lot of us this year too. It looks like we won't be doing a tournament in April because of the economy, though October is on. I've got a few tournament invites in the late spring/early summer which will take up a good amount of my free time, and it would be good to get past some of the junk that's going on with the economy, which waiting until '10 would do.

So you're moving to Monterey? Cool, that means you'll be quite a bit closer and I might get to see you guys a little more often. You'll be in state in June is it?

Thanks, Jeff, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one going chin down, sword out this year. It's extremely heartening though that Alan is pressing forward to keep the glede burning.

I'll be out in Monterey in late June, for a course start date of 7 July. I wouldn't miss coming down a time or several.

I was just thinking the same thing in regards to the economy today. Good year to take a breather. I went to an SCA event this past weekend that was tiny even half of the host group didn't come because many of them worked in a plant that had huge layoffs.

If you were going to be on the ground a couple of weeks earlier, I would gladly invite you to the 14th century feast I'm putting together for June Crown- I'm going to try and capture some of that lovely backgammon-by-candlelight atmosphere we experienced at CiT I. I hope you are able to get resettled in good order and can find some time to come play with your northern neighbors as well!

This is somewhat late in the game, but there is the option of a camp at the Tournament of the Phoenix. John and crew have been kicking the idea around.

Can't pay you to be there, but I can offer an established event (which means no organization to deal with for the attendees), crowds who will be captivated by what you do, free ice, beer, showers, groundfires etc.

Oh, and one hell of a tournament and the gratitude of the organizer.

John, you should consider hooking up with the Renaissance Military Society (RMS). I'm pretty sure their charter covers from about 1450 to 1600 or so, though most are early to late 16th c.

http://snjacobson.com/RMS.htm

They may also have pointers to sites in the Bay area.
