Lord Seaan OHagans kit

Post by UntimelyEpiphany »

I need advise on how to do this look as accurately as possible?

http://www.stcolin.com/breathren/Seaan.php

They say they are "modeled after a crusading order of the middle ages, with a particular emphasis on the crusades in the Baltics in the 13th and 14th centuries"

what exact dates would a look like this come from?
Could you wear the steel guantlets with a norman helm and chainmail?
What would be the ideal leg protection for this period?
Where can I buy a pattern for that awesome hooded coat?

Thanks alot for the help!
Im looking forward to joining the SCA in a few weeks

Peace

The red robes with white cross are a pretty short lived order of Hospitilars. I believe "knights of Malta"

The steel gauntlets are an SCA safety regulation. At that time period warriors would not have had steel gauntlets of that type. More than likely they would have had chainmaille mittens or no hand protection.

Chainmaille chausses or gamboissed cuisses.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

Talk to Pious Bro. Amos here on the Archive; he made the most awesomely inventive chain "mittens" by covering lacross gloves with maille.

Yes and no...The Knights of Malta "are" the Hospitallers and they still exist today. During their history they were known as the Order of St John of Jerusalem first then Malta then Rhodes.

They red/white combo came about in 1258 when the actual Knights were allowed to wear that color combo into battle and the group as a whole by the end of the 13th century. The black/white combo was reserved for their everyday usage at this time.

Greetings UntimelyEpiphany,

Seaan's used steel gauntlets as a safety measure, they are not correct for the period he is portraying here. But smashed fingers are no fun, similarly my gauntlets are also incorrect. Brother Amos has a very nice looking solution, and I believe if you do some searching here there are a couple of discussions about how you can do something similar to Amos' chain covered lacrosse gear.

Others have addressed the leg harness questions. I wear a gamboised cuisse with a knee cop or poleyn pointed to it. I have hidden splints inside the cuisse and this works pretty well, I believe there are some decent photos somewhere on our site although you may need to do some creative searching.

The robes are a pretty simple design consisting of rectangles and triangular gores whith a large hood attached.

The range we recreate is intentionally loose.
So we have folks who do fairly early (Seaan, essentially first crusade) through one member who wheres milanese plate, putting him somewhere around the 7th crusade or later (honestly not my forte being that late)

My harness is circa 1250.

Welcome to the archive and best of luck in your adventures.
