So very true. I was thinking that one of the things missing from our SCA battlefields is SMELLS....
The smell of horses, of smoke and fire, and yes blood and shit.
By the way, nice pictures of Belarus women....

The air in Manhattan goes dead still in high summer - no breexe, nada.
Years ago at the manhattan practice the air just hung, it was as hot and humid as all hell, and you were definately breathing someone else's air and sweat.
There is a trendoid bar across the street, whoever the actress is who played Zena's sidekick came out, saw the practice, crossed the street to watch, she was chatting with a couple of us, and suddenly wrinkled her nose, and asked
"Would people fighting in armor actually stink like this"
Viscount Edwards paused, looked and said
"Probably not - there's no blood, piss, vomit, or dung on the field"
The actress went back to the airconditioned bar

Any questions?

Because we live in America and therefore can't have a "No Wussies Allowed" rule. Also the lawiers and insurance A-Holes would have a field day.

It looks cool, but frankly if I'm standing next to a live fire I'm going to be in a bunker coat, not a surcoat.

Surely there is room in our game to combine the two worlds: flaming lawyers on the field might be a welcome addition.

Fire really adds a lot to the experience. I've participated in The Raid on Martin's Station, which is held at and sponsored by a Virginia State Park. Realize that park rangers have to assure the safety of generally the lowest common denominator of American society - the tourist - and they can still make this happen. We have real guns, too, and shoot them at each other (using blank loads).
The SCA is going to have to change its attitude before this kind of fun can happen, and I don't see that ever happening.

Are we sure there's no SCA in Belarus? I see Rus, Crusaders, and a small cannon!

Better to go to one of the reenactments in Poland. The Russ, Belorussians, Poles, Ukrainians, et al mix it up pretty thoroughly. Poland is a lot easier to get to and there is a lot more to do once you are there...
... though my wife (who is there currently with the children to visit her parents over the summer holiday) tells me that the streets of Minsk are filled with beautiful young women in their summer finest

For the love of god, man, don't rub it in!
The added environmental immersion with the fire and the smells must be amazing. Okay, I admit it, I'm jealous.

Actually the guys fighting were dead sober - probably the only ones at the time. Also to add to the disappointment they wore safety glasses and had a fire extinguisher nearby... my household rocks!

I'd HAVE to drink to try that. Plus, I think my wife would be mounting my head on a wall. She has a connip when I jump the Beltaine fire.

Because in ex-Soviet reenactment broken arms, scars ... are normal at a combat event.
...same basic reason you don't see too many Messerfecht events
