Clinton War - EMP Tournament Video (Magnus)

Post by Magnus Ulfgarsson »

Here are a couple of my favorite moments from the alternating EMP / SCA tournament held at Clinton Friday Night.

Note that everything done in these videos is legal under EMP rules. Enjoy.

actually he kicked me in the upper chest.

290 pound dood kicks 157lb dood in the chest equals one heck of a knockback.

literally drove me to the ground.

There were some great fights in that tourney.

Everyone had a great time, including the spectators!!

I will try to get some of my video up soon, I need to edit Trimaris crown though....

I think that these clips show why I believe that all fighting in the SCA is tourney style fighting.

Cool video.

Those clips are so short. You should put up more footage.

Thats awesome. I saw a vid of EMP fighting in a fire ring.

I seriously wish the SCA allowed that, or I wish the EMP was bigger and had folks down here. I can see why others left the SCA like the Tuchux and such.

Still I am taking up SCA fighting because thats all there is around here. Well I joined Adrian Empire as well but thats pretty much tourney fighting only as well.

ETA - before anyone gets all butthurt or offended (I know some SCA folks are EXTREMELY sensitive to even the slightest SCA criticism) I understand the SCA and its tourney / gentleman style of fighting as its a chivalrous system of honor. As an SCA member I can still have the opinion that I would prefer to fight like the EMP and others given the chance. If a group like that came along, I would join in a heartbeat but for now the SCA is the only thing remotely like it in my area.

ETA2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WunPbdRokTA video I was talking about. That looks 100% more fun than sword and board SCA stuff IMHO.

The Tuchux never have been part of the SCA. It has always been a seperate organization with similar armour and weapon standards.

AND, there is nothing stopping you from starting your own EMP group down there. I am sure they would welcome the expansion. If you are unhappy with the way the SCA does things please go do what your heart wants.

I must have read wrong then as I though the originator was indeed SCA but didn't like the fighting style so started his own thing. In any case I can see the attraction for a different style of fighting.

I am not all that unhappy with the way the SCA does stuff. If it truly bugged me that much I would never have joined. I am not going to start any new group. If one comes along, I will join it but I am not bothered enough to actually create a new group. My heart desires to have fun with what I have. Right now that is SCA and Adrian Empire.

I am still fairly new to the SCA and I just started heavy. I mean literally just started. I still hold my opinion that EMP style fighting looks a hell of a lot more attractive. That does not mean I wont like SCA tourney style fighting, I am quite sure I will have immense fun with it. I am just saying overall the other is more attractive.

Are you talking about the Tuchux or EMP? I don't know how the Tuchux got started. But, the Originator of EMP actually got kicked out of the SCA and then started his own group, the EMP.

I was thinking the guy who started Tuchux was SCA or was going to be SCA then decided the fighting wasnt to his likings. I am more than likely wrong though.

The EMP guy got kicked out of the SCA? Holy crap what does one have to do to do that? I thought it had to be extremely severe.

"Lots" of allegations of wrong doings, nothing proven, not much in the way of "due process" (he wasn't even at the event one of the accusations stemmed from).

Evidently even accusations of "bad stuff" is enough for the SCA to take action against those who cast the organisation in "a bad light"

I've been SCA fighting for round about 20 years. EMP looks like a ball.
If there was some stuff local to me, I'd give it a go.
Same with Adrian Empire (BTW also formed by folks who found the SCA didn't meet their needs)
I still love the SCA.

As to Tuchux:
They had a completely independent genesis from the SCA but since Pensic is the biggest party in town they have attended al along and it has influenced their game and equipment. In the early days their armour was nothing like ours but they would gear up for Pennsic battles then they evolved to similar gear year-round.

As to EMP:
It was started by a couple basically, he was kicked out of the SCA as described there were a lot of accusations (it helps that a letter was circulated on the internet for 6 months requesting any and all complaints about his 20 years in the SCA) and when he started picking apart the accusations they said basically "Don't bother, we don't care about the truth of any specific allegations, there's obviously a pattern...". So why him? It didn't help that he was an ardent board reformer and activist and that as king he requested and indepentent audit of his kingdom's books. It also didn't help that he was a colorful and outspoken duke. Water under the bridge. Now instead of trying to change the course of the SCA they've started over from scratch....

As to which is better:
I'll always be mostly an SCA fighter. It's a great game and you can't beat the shear scale of it, plus the rules make it more available to wider range of participants and are safer for huge groups of strangers on the same field. EMP is safe in part because it's small and friendly. But anyone who trains in armour for 20 years is, at some point likely to want to experiment with a broader type of fighting and the EMP is perfect for that. It REALLY helps show you the difference between real martial technique and gamesmanship. If you are one of those "would this really work" types then you owe it to yourself to give it a try.

Ceddie:
We are planning an EMP event in Florida, hopefully this february called "Lupercalia". Baldar is the autocrat and a staff is in place with 1/2dozen regular EMP guys scheduled to attend but we still don't have a site.
The theme is a Roman festival with gladitorial games and assorted debauchery... Any site suggestions?
(BTW EMP insurance is automatic and actually way better than SCA, Inc's so that's not an issue)
