Improving war and tourney fighting (SCA)

Post by Vladimir »

Hmm, I don't know how to make a poll, so I'll have to do it this way. Please don't nitpick on the terms war and tourney. We all know what I'm talking about here.

To improve SCA war (melee) and tourney (single) fighting we should...

1. leave everything as is.

2. use a counted blows system for both tourneys and melees (similar to CoTT).

3. use a counted blows system for tourneys and keep melees as they are.

4. keep tourneys as they are and use counted blows for melee.

5. other (please elaborate).

#1, leave everything as is.

If you have a legitimate beef with something (some people don't like to fight from their knees, for example) adapt to fit the current system. For example, take a leg as a kill shot.

I have been doing that as of late, my body just won't allow me to fight from the knees comfortably anymore.

I think we have a pretty good system, I also think we could expand to other systems and let people choose what they want to do.

Hmm, I'm torn between "leave it alone" and experimenting with different systems. I definitely think counted blows would not work for general melee.

I'll post more on this when I'm soberer.

#1.

I have no right to ruin others fun. While I hate knee fighting & will not do it myself, for others it is fun. I would howl if counted blows or armour as worn were banned as a concept. I can not rain on their parade.

That being said if there was ONE fighter who would like to fight in a historical manner, I would go to that event rather than attend a battle with 2K fighters from their knees.

Aaron. We should have a bout next time we are both at an event together. I love fighting under the counted blows system.

Strange, we are both in the same kingdom and yet the only time I have met you was at a horseman's joust.

Instead of trying to change mainstream SCA, I have learned to gravitate toward like minded individuals IN the SCA and share deeds and battles with them.

My wife and I cancelled our trip to England next year to make sure we could do Pennsic and attend the COTT. It is that cool and important to people like us. If the COTT wasn't happening? I'd be seeing England that week.

5) Other: Leave things as they are, run your own special tourneys (Like the COTT, Warriors of History, or even a pandybat) often, have fun and realize that the current system is fine.

#3 I think tornies should be 3 counted blows but one of those has to be to the head or torso. I think it would just complicate things to much in general meeles.
